Technically yes but weapons systems officers are also qualified pilots.[/q negative if they were qualified pilots they would be flying something. Most wizzos that I knew and the one i do know currently are there because they could not be piolots.

So on F15E they have the stick and peddles in the aft cockpit. The WSO has been trained as a pilot and can fly the jet in emergencies. However once on station they would have to stay current on training to be a qualified pilot in their records. So they will not ever actually pilot the jet from the front seat but they are qualified pilots in the sense that they were certified and get enough stick time to still take over if needed. We had a pilot that had his stick come off in flight and the WSO had to fly the jet back and land it.

So I take it you were in and F-15E fighter squadron or AMU? Pretty sure I have been for the last 25 years.

Can fly and qualified pilot are two very different things.

I pray this is true but I haven't seen a source for this anywhere?

so you're telling me that all F-15 WSOs are also winged pilots? based on your 25 years in an F-15E fighter squadron or AMU

Our super advanced multi million dollar fighter jet just got shot out of the air by a 3rd world country using weapons from the 1970s. There's nothing badass about this.

I have been around F18 Super Hornets but never to the point that I was able to look in the cockpit. That blows my mind that they wouldn't have flight controls in the aft cockpit. The F15E and 2 seater F16s have flight controls in the aft cockpit.

Nevermind. New dumbest post of the day.

They are qualified as pilots and get enough stick time to remain qualified as pilots. They just dont do the same amount of training to stay qualified as a front seater. So will they ever take lead in a mission, no. They are still qualified pilots even to the point if they needed to take over in a mission they could.

Again, I don’t think you know what those words mean. I don’t mean this as a slight and I thank you for your service.

That is a strong internet flex.

how are you defining "qualified pilot"?
training on how to fly and land a plane in an emergency does not make them "qualified pilots" by any definition i've ever heard.

They are qualified as pilots and do enough stick time to keep up their qualifications as pilots. They just do not do enough training to take over as a front seater in a mission. You do not see it a lot but in my time I have seen at least 5 occasions a WSO has had to fly the jet back and land it. I have not ever seen in the desert on mission a WSO have a need to take over and I do not think they would let one fly an active mission if something happened before the mission.
