In my 30 years of military experience, I found that "unsuspecting" enemy combatants were the very best ones to attack!!!

Since the American Civil War, no American military has ever had to evince that kind of fortitude. As late as WW1 the British and European armies suffered horrifying casualties that America hasn’t seen since the nineteenth century.
Go look at the roster of the defenders of the Alamo - it’s a bunch of Scotsman for the most part. These were the people who made up Wellington’s infantry.
The two world wars broke those nations, but up until WW2, those were some of the toughest people in the world.
