It's not "welfare" if you paid into the system when young and collect when old.
There are plenty of reasons not to like Social Security, but calling it welfare is idiotic.
Take that up with the SCOTUS, since they are the ones that ruled it an entitlement.
Also, SS taxes began being taken out in 1937 and the first recipients got their (full) benefits in 1940. For the entire duration of the program it has worked by current taxpayers paying for current retirees. Just like any other entitlement.
The only reason y'all think it's different is because you've bought into the sales pitch that FDR used to sell it to the public in the first place.

Don't be obtuse.
The government created a program. This program takes money out of paychecks of workers. This money is then directly transferred to another group of people to “help them”.
What is that called? Welfare.
Trying to call it anything but welfare is being obtuse. It is quite literally by the definition welfare. Just because they directly carve it out of your paycheck instead of hiding it in the general fund doesn’t mean it’s magically not welfare.

Nonsense. It has a calculated rate of return based on contributions.
Look. I'm not defending the program. It just isn't welfare. And pointing to the small fraction that recieved benefits and paid little to nothing into the system does not define the entirety of the program.

Nope. You can receive with zero contribution.

How about the majority that receive more benefits than they “paid in” as you like to say. How does that work out? Hmmm what’s that? We have been spending more on social security than social security has brought in for years and the gap between spending and collecting is only getting wider?

Got a number for this or are you just talking out of you're arse?
Look. If you have a homeowners policy and a house fire, no one calls you a "welfare queen' when the cost of replacement is greater than the sum of your premiums.
Sure, some people will outlive their contributions, but others will not.
It's not a welfare program. And simply saying the same thing over and over again won't change that fact.
Again, there are many reasons to dislike SS, but slapping the "welfare" label on it and expecting everyone to play stupid isn't very effective.

Social Security = a form of welfare
So to avoid getting welfare, you'll be refusing to draw your social security? Are you going to donate it? Let the government keep it?

Lower- and middle-income Americans who work every year from ages 22 to 65 will pay between $171,000 and $608,000 in payroll taxes for Medicare and Social Security, depending on their income bracket. And though they will receive more in Medicare and Social Security benefits than they paid for, Social Security is a bad deal for workers and their families because they could receive two- to three-times as much, on average, from saving and investing their own money, without adding to the debt burden for younger generations.

Well your homeowners policy isn’t the government.

More do than don’t.

It is quite literally a welfare program and the fact that you still can’t figure that out is troubling.

I’m sorry that you want to play semantics behind what welfare is but I’m sorry to report to you that, yes, social security is welfare. It is nothing but the government forcing wealth redistribution from young and healthy to the old and infirm.
It is no different than section 8, foodstamps, wic, Medicare, medicaid and a plethora of other welfare programs.

How can this..
and this..
both be true?
BJ is right... it really is no different than any other money they take from your paycheck- you do know it doesn’t go into a little fund labeled "Wildcat", right? It's more like a forced potluck.

Does anybody actually believe those on both sides care about the average American citizen????? Do you not realize none of what they are doing to US affects them, because they're all Millionaires, the middle class is what makes the country go not them

Not by design.
But when it's poorly run it can certainly start looking like it.

quote:and this is how SS was sold to our most elderly. We younger generations don't see SS this way, and understand we need to take advantage of retirement funding options that weren't as easily available to our current elderly when they were younger.
I'm retired and I live off the money I saved/invested over the course of my career.
The elderly in 30+yrs can't use this excuse, as every current worker knows SS payments every paycheck is legitimately just money being stolen by our govt, and will not be there upon retirement.
People in charge not doing something back in the day when Bush tried too failed us. Especially since we were importing and letting people who didn't put in to draw
