A bill introduced in Florida takes aim at paper drinking straws and stirrers at food businesses and restaurants.
Senate Bill 958 was introduced Dec. 18 — with an identical House bill, HB 2195, introduced Dec. 26 — to limit what cities and counties can do to regulate drinking straws and stirrers.
“Many businesses and communities in this state are using paper drinking straws and stirrers as a purportedly better option for public health and the environment,” HB 2195 states.
“However, independent university studies have shown that most paper straws contain harmful PFAS chemicals, exposure to which is linked to concerning health risks.”
The bill states that any regulation of drinking straws must be based on “government policy driven by science.”

Good. I hate those things. Ban liberals while they are at it

My favorite story of sheriff Harry Lee Jefferson Parish.
He got night vision equipment for the SWAT teams and he said they could practice and at the same time eradicate nutria destroying the canals between our highways. The animal activists went crazy and he backed down......for a week.
Then he held a presser, walked to the podium, gripped it with both hands, tears in his eyes and said "Im so mad at myself. What could I have been thinking calling off the hunt for nutria. TODAY, TODAY A DAMNED NUTRIA DARN NEAR ATTACKED ONE OF THE CHILDEN OF THIS PARISH. Poor child just playing in a park and this damned nutria almost attacked. THE HUNT IS BACK ON.
There was no attack, and I highly doubt there are toxic chemicals in a paper straw, but Im glad we are getting rid of them. Somewhere John Kerry flying at 20K feet in his private jet is weeping over what the plastic strawswill do to his wallet.......I mean the environment.

Paper straws are dumb but if a private business wants to use them that is their choice

frick banning things. Let freedom ring. If one wants to use paper, use it. If one wants to use plastic, use it. Stop telling businesses what to do.

So ban PFAS in certain products. Get to the damn root of the problem and address THAT! I had to deal with this type of shite and work and here it is again. Fix the damn problem.

Disney World and Key West fruitcakes aren’t going to like this. I don’t know if you can get a plastic straw in all of Disney World.

No one LIKES paper drinking straws.
But is it any business of the government to ban them? Shouldn't the market be allowed to sort this out?

What exactly happened to paper straws?
I am over 60, and remember having paper straws when I was a kid, but I do not remember the straws EVER coming apart or disintegrating like the current ones do.

I suspect it is a combination of several things. First, I suspect that they formerly included a LOT of additives to the paper back in the 1960s that would be ... frowned upon ... today.
Second, plastic extrusion has gotten easier and cheaper in the last six decades, making plastic straws cheaper for the business. They were certainly AVAILABLE when we were kids, but they were much thicker (as I recall) and probably much more expensive than the paper variant.

If FPAS is so bad, address it in all products. Looking ONLY at drinking straws certainly seems ... political.

Starbucks tried them when the Dems said it would save the dophins or something. They immediately realized that they don't work and went back to plastic. They're only used by female SB customers who like big plastic glasses full of sugar, chocolate, whipped cream, milk and a tiny drop of actual coffee.

How many of you have stood on the north shoreline of Aruba and seen the incredible amount of plastic trash that has washed up on the island? And is washing up right now as you read this.
Cups, toy pieces, straws, shoes, etc.
1) Government shouldn’t be banning private businesses from doing anything IMO.
2) Paper straws have their place. There also alternatives such as agave that work very well.
3) Personally I avoid single use plastic as much as possible in my life. Using a plastic spoon for 30 seconds that will be in a landfill forever seems ridiculous to me.

I only use a wooden stir stick to swirl Stevia natural into my espresso. That stick is dumped into the ocean so the sharks can use it to pick clean their teeth.
