Republicans are vastly outnumbered and have been phased out over decades of policy and hiring.

I'll agree with that, but I think it has more to do with the education system becoming a surrogate of the government. Particularly after the department of education was created. It became easier for lazy leftist to get teaching jobs because they were too incompetent to get apply their knowledge in the real world. The government relied on quotats to hire unqualified people to take over the education system.

There are whole books written on that subject. If you really want to know you will have to read one. It is far to complicated for a thread on TD.
Recommendations?

"Stalin's Secret Agents"
"Blacklisted by History".
The former being a shorter read/listen that covers the highlights while the latter goes into exhaustive detail.

Using just Cry Havoc! the book by Ralph de Toledano (co-founder of National Review with Bill Buckley) as a reference is sufficient to get some idea of the depth and pervasiveness of the malignancy.
Basically, while those who went through the Depression and then survived the world's worst war were trying to just start new lives as the unique emerging middle class - of the late 40's and the 50's, it just happened to be concomitant with neo-marxism taking root assisted by the duplicity of the unaware and naive among those making decisions at the top.
All due to really bad decisions by those in charge giving political sanctuary to types like Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, and a host of others along with the legions of like-minded they produced over these 80 years which now infest every critical institution - even the military.
As for Cry Havoc!, considering what allowing hardcore, doctrinaire neo-Marxists into the West, giving them sanctuary and carte blanche access to our critical institutions has resulted in, and what they proudly announced as their objectives for the West, it could be the most accurate, appropriately titled book ever.
Their objective was/is to corrupt every aspect of Western culture using the schools, the arts, and even science if possible with their pet Cybernetics.
See the Macy Conferences a series of marxist-tinged conclaves where the term "cybernetics" was coined for the first time by Norbert Wiener, and even AI was discussed for the first time, all under the guise of scientists and behaviorists meeting to discuss their theories, seeking input from others - which included peer reviews of their work.
One of them, Erich Fromm in true neo-Marxian fervor believed that the prime objective was to uproot established western traditions and heritages as absolutely necessary for making possible universal equality.
One of his fellow-travelers also gave us this gem, this warning - and he did it with impunity:
We will gradually infiltrate their educational institutions and their political offices, transforming them slowly into Marxist entities as we move towards universal egalitarianism.
~ Max Horkheimer
Have to hand it to them for focus, dedication, patience, and bringing what apparently has been an appealing message to many young minds.

The media has had a leftward lean at least as far back as Cronkite.

They made the jobs miserable and low-paying long enough that only certain types of people were interested.

Because the left is playing for keeps while many on the right bury their heads in the sand and deny what's happening.
Democrats and the vast majority of democrat voters would put us all in extermination camps if they could. Too many on the right just convince themselves that the pendulum will swing back on its own at some point while not realizing that the pendulum is broken.
Every single economic policy produced by the left is designed to reduce the purchasing power of Republican voters.

The socialist/communist/Marxist influence in many of our institutions has been there for over hundred years. The biggest influx of socialists//communists/Marxists occurred after WWI and WWII when the US allowed a lot of enlightened Europeans into the country. Unfortunately there were quite a few academics/professors/educators in the European immigrants after WWI and WWII.....quite a few found employment in US universities, as they say, the rest is history.

public primary/secondary education you can start here -
those two SC decisions basically left the NEA unchecked (across all levels of education) in the progressive/liberal agenda it has always operated with since its inception all the way back in 1857 -
once the Church was removed from public education - every 'institution' of higher learning was free to be cultivated as a bastion of anti-conservative values - indoctrinating all American youth it touched -
quote:
On June 25, 1962, the United States Supreme Court decided in Engel v. Vitale that a prayer approved by the New York Board of Regents for use in schools violated the First Amendment by constituting an establishment of religion. The following year, in Abington School District v. Schempp, the Court disallowed Bible readings in public schools for similar reasons.
These two landmark Supreme Court decisions centered on the place of religion in public education, and particularly the place of Protestantism, which had long been accepted as the given American faith tradition. Both decisions ultimately changed the face of American civil society, and in turn, helped usher in the last half-century (quote from 2012) of the culture wars.

Started in the 1930s with media, especially Hollywood. Then academia. From that it was only a matter of time before it was big enough to convince millions leftism is correct.
