He has 250k debt from NYU Film School and at 30 years old still vagabonds. How do reach a kid like this? For fricks sake at 30 he's not even a kid anymore, or at least shouldn't be.

Does he even want your advice?

Play it by ear and enjoy the moment.

Best case scenario: (also, likely impossible) He doesn’t whine, or complain, or bring up anything remotely related to politics. If this is the case, he’s admitting that he’s wrong. That potato is wrong. That’s enough common ground for a dinner, should it be so, to not have to rub it in. That’s his Dad’s job, anyway.

If he pokes his chest out, I would momentarily defer to the elders before I served him a heaping pile of red pill, to be washed down with a tall glass of shut the hell up.

As long as someone (including me) can admit they’re wrong- real progress can be made through common desire for each other’s happiness. But, the time for keeping our heads down and mouths closed to avoid confrontation is over. It sucks to have to stand your ground- when it comes to those you care about. But, if you really care- you do the work.

Last I heard, a few years ago, USC FS was $75K a year

And people wondered why Lori Loughlin et al would lie and cheat to get their kids scholarships to these places

I know what my response to this post would be if it weren't personal. But stating the obvious would create so much family turmoil, it's really not an option.

Actually, it is an option.

Frankly, it's probably the ONLY option. People need to hear your unbridled, heated anger. The people like your nephew need to hear you yell and cuss about how fricking insane the policies he voted for are, and how badly they're hurting you.

He needs to feel your unabated pain. He needs to realize that what he is feeling is NOTHING compared to the normal people in America just trying to get by with no safety net.

If that causes turmoil, GOOD. But turmoil is needed right now. If your family is strong enough, you'll overcome it. If not, would it have been worth walking on eggshells to not upset the fragile minded?

Your nephew sounds like my two cousins in Portland. The most entitled, soy fueled white commies you can imagine. I absolutely eviscerated them both in a factual debate a few years back. They were basically calling me a stupid uneducated redneck who understood nothing of the world, to which I replied that their dad paid for their cars, their homes, their groceries, their bills and even their 6 month European tour chasing their dream of playing guitars and singing on stage in foreign pubs. They were well into their early 30s before they ever even began to decouple from daddy's wallet... and then he passed away and they inherited his savings and now they spend most of their time running around with anqueefa and protesting about how bad America is.

They were handed literally everything on a silver platter with a golden spoon and never wanted for anything, while I came up so destitute that "dirt poor" would have been a monumental upgrade, and through hard work became a productive middle class citizen via life experiences and a bumpy path that only someone who has been on can understand.

Both cousins and their mom no longer speak to me. I don't miss them, either. The rest of that side of the family, I'm still close with.

Tell him that the policies that he supports are eating into your retirement nest egg. Let him know of the sacrifices you made to save that money. You can chase your dreams and still be fiscally responsible and accountable, unless you're a gambler.

That would be your own fault.

Damn.

I’ve got a lot of debt too and got my Masters in Humanities. I manned up and got a job that pays better than directing theater so I’d be able to make my loan payments.

Then, when I needed more money, I worked my arse off and got promoted at the last two companies I’ve worked for.

It takes hard work, but it sounds like he doesn’t want to work.

A lot of people are saying you should call him out. If he’s not ready to hear it, he won’t. I find the best thing to do is talk about my experience and stay focused on me and how I overcame the challenges life threw at me.

If he wants to talk about things you don’t want to talk about, keep changing the subject. It’d be nice to be able to get up and leave, but I don’t punish other people or deprive myself of family over one person.

By not engaging and staying centered in my own peace of mind, I don’t give up my power to immature people.

Then just pay for your part of the check. And leave.

Getting a little perspective about how the rest of the world actually lives helps. We have it really good here. We are extremely spoiled. Perspective is everything

I graduated college the first time at 20 went to work for Chevron as an operator and pissed away every dollar I made until I was 30…went back to school and now I’m an chemical/petroleum engineer…I know it’s not film school but some people don’t fully get their shite together until they are 35 and still turn out ok just to give you some hope.

My personal opinion.
Politics- no real reason to bring this up, especially if you know it will be highly contentious topic.
His student debt and financial struggle- unless he directly solicits advice, it really isn’t something I would interject my opinion into.

Now, if he brings it up as a point of conversation (not just in passing “how have things been” style) and he is seeking your personal opinion, then gloves off.

Otherwise, why make rifts over your disapproval of this adults life/economic/political choices?

If it turns your stomach so badly to even sit across the table without saying anything, maybe you shouldn’t be breaking bread to begin with?
