The fact that boomers think of themselves as tough is quite comical

OK Buzzfeed_Tigah
This is a favorite talking point of your generation. I can't bring myself to dignify it with a proper response.
And this is touted as a positive? Good grief.
Today's therapists thank Boomers for this.

So participation trophies are good?

Ultimately? Inconsequential. Kids aren't rational. Kids are emotional. A child who receives a "participation trophy" isn't guaranteed to mature into an adult who expects to be participation hired because s/he applied for a job.

DESTROY MY SOCIETY! JUST DON'T CALL ME RACIST!
The shitshow that these "boomers stole my prosperity" threads are can be confusing. You posted this like it's a criticism/suggestion directed at boomers, but doesn't "destroy my society, just don't call me racist" apply more broadly to younger generations? Boomer women are more liberal than they should be but they're deplorable white nationalists compared to young women and about 70% of young men.

The assertion is about boomers, though. which tracks.

What baffles me is why so many of my peers from my generation went on to completely change their parenting style and raised a bunch of pussies and weaklings?
The introduction of "daytime TV" in the mid-80's when young housewives across the nation were told to eschew thousands of years of parenting common sense in favor of coddling, unearned exceptionalism, non-physical "punishment" and the mindset that little Timmy can do no wrong and everyone else was responsible for his problems instead of Timmy himself. Which soon evolved into over-sheltering and participation trophies.
From that point on, the parents who wholesale bought into these new ideas helped create the adult-aged child phenomenon we see today. So if any Gen Z folks wants to blame Boomers for anything, feel free to use this info.

You were correct when you stated you couldn't dignify it with a proper response. What happens during the formative years have a large impact on adulthood. And if a child received a participation trophy, it is likely that it happened more than once.

by whom?
I certainly was beat with a belt by my boomer dad. I wasn't allowed to be sad about anything, either, by either of my parents. I still can only talk to them about happy things or they start glitching. I'm not allowed to have any problems. Which is fine. They are doing the best they can.
Plenty of people still hit/beat their children. And plenty of parents are still assholes to their kids. I never knew this was looked at favorably, though.

What negative outcomes are associated with participation trophies? The research has mixed results.

This is not just boomers, this also applies to Gen Xers.
Millennials are the ones that got off track and couldn't leave mom & dad's basement!

quote:This may separate into a male-female thing. Boys are innately competitive. Success or the striving for success through competition hones a mentality of focus and perseverance which can be immensely valuable later in life. I didn't have to work hard in academics, just coasted along and did well. Sports was different. Through little leagues and especially HS, the focus and perseverance pursuing sports "trophies" taught life lessons still with me today. So it isn't about expecting "to be participation hired," as much as avoiding that situation altogether.
Kids aren't rational. Kids are emotional. A child who receives a "participation trophy" isn't guaranteed to mature into an adult who expects to be participation hired
