there scientific proof that red-lights even slow the spread of traffic fatalities? After all, how many fatalities result from folks running red lights?

Is there scientific proof that policemen even slow the spread of homicides? After all, how many fatalities result from police themselves?

Is there any scientific proof that surgical masks even slow the the spread infections? After all, how many fatalities result from surgical infections?

Is there any scientific proof that looking both ways before crossing the road slows the the spread pedestrian-MV injuries?

Oh now the dem wants to use statistics. Funny how that works.

4 pages and ZERO proof.

Masks are just a Karen “feel-good” symbol.

Nope - In fact the direct opposite. They are harmful to the person that is wearing them all day after continuous contamination.

Sounds kind of like Fauci. No randomized double blind placebo controlled trials to prove it works so it must be false (Hydroxychloroquine). But because it kind make sense to me (especially the piss and wearing pants analogy) it must be true (wearing mask).

Any questions?

Well actually yes, two.
1. How many individuals with their chest cavities cut open do you encounter on a regular basis?
2. Are you as stupid as your post would indicate?

So you probably think other countries are in on the whole FauxVid scam eh?

The whole travel ban on Americans is all part of the plot?

Yes there is proof that a mask will work. But in order for it to work it must be designed to protect from a specific hazard type (a virus), it must be cleaned regularly, it must fit properly, and it must be used correctly.

It’s hilarious that you think you’re the intelligent one in this thread.

The answer to all of those questions, except #3, is yes. If not scientific proof, then at least actual data and real world examples.

And as for your picture earlier in the thread, surgeons are also wearing hairnets, gloves, and gowns. Why are those things also being mandated to stop the spread of covid?

Well, he is a doctor so I will go with probably, maybe he is the intelligent one in the thread. I'm a viral load guy. Will masks eliminate the possibility of becoming infected; hell no? Will protection reduce the possibility of infection and possibly reduce your viral load? Absolutely!

Wuhan virus

So it should be fairly obvious that there is not much data that's been reviewed and really great in the setting of a novel virus.

We have a fair amount of other data on masks and their use. I've made a handful of references with links but am not in a place to post links at this time. So if I may summarize:

1) decent data that n95, whether worn for full shifts or just in patient rooms protect nurses from patients with influenza AND bacterial respiratory illnesses. These were, of course, properly-fit n95 masks.
2) surgical masks in the same study reduced the transmission. The 95% confidence interval crossed 1 (barely), but it would be reasonable to assume that it lowered the rate of transmission.
Roughly speaking, the above odds ratios were ~25% the number of cases in n95 all the time, ~45% in n95 around the patients, ~67% with surgical masks around patients
This was something like 3591 nurses. The group studied was in Beijing I believe. It's a fairly well done study, and all the above rates are compared to no mask at all

3) there's a meta analysis of 16ish studies. One of them shows that coughing through a mask prevents culturing virus. It points out that this doesn't take into account leakage around the mask but does decently "prove" that the concept of filtering a cough at 10cm is effective

4) the rest of the meta analysis looks at old community based studies. There were basically 2 of the 15 studies that demonstrated a positive impact from masks
A) cloth masks in field hospitals during the Spanish Flu epidemic. It's not discredited, but it's over 100 year old data, standards weren't the same, and these were outdoor hospitals. It isn't particularly applicable. But it did show masks superior to no masks
B) a subset of a study that was , if I'm not mistaken again in China, showed that when someone in a household got an influenza like illness and all contacts resorted to mask wearing + handwashing within 24h of the initial case, there was less spread within the family. This wasn't the main outcome and the overall study showed masking not superior to not masking. The other 13ish studies included pretty much showed no effect- now read the next part as written as it is a fairly deliberately worded summary- when people were instructed to wear masks vs allowed to not wear masks. Compliance wasn't measured.

My takeaway from most of my research on the topic is:
Appropriate mask wearing is fairly effective, the better the mask and the more it's worn, the more effective, but there is a lack of data that even people who know they are being studied can effectively prevent spread of influenza and influenza-like illnesses from wearing masks in real-world/community settings.

Against the Wuhan virus?

Yes. When mask usage (of the least effective homemade cloth variety/bandanas, etc.) approaches 95%, transmission of China Flu is reduced by about 30%.

Better masks mean lower transmission but most people wear cloth or simple procedure masks.

I read that research. It's also not possible to have 95% of people compliant when the virus is only threatening to old and unhealthy people lol I've seen idiots try and use survey data to create a heat map of who's the most compliant

Sciencing so hard to prove an unproveable fact in reality makes people look really dumb and desperate

Now if they discover the virus can be aerosolized it is WAY too small to be trapped in a cloth mask.

This is what is being bandied about. Based on anecdotal information, it certainly seems plausible. If so...open things up.
