Protest tourism, people who come and spend money, then LEAVE.....

Welcome new "immigrants" that come in and suck money from the state, don't follow laws and customs, and STAY......

Europe is so screwed......

Tourism accounts for 40% of New Orleans’s economy. It is literally one of the cities that actually would crumble (as Baldona mentioned) without tourism.

I've been in France for about 3 weeks now (staying 6 weeks) and I dont see any of that. Everywhere I go they are happy for tourists. The Louvre thing is a strike because of massive tourism. They have been working their asses off, or so they say. We were in Paris 3 weeks ago, which is a little early in the season, and it was busier than I've ever seen it.

When the US sent 100s of thousands of troops to England in preparation for WW2, what was the favorite expression of the Brits.....

The US soldiers are oversexed, overpaid.....and over here

Its a double edged sword. Most economists' stats say a tourist will spend X amount in a country which is multiplied 5 times before being absorbed into the local economy. In other words, they eat at a rest. that waiter takes the tips and buys groceries, the clerk at the grocery takes that money and goes to the market, etc.

You end up with a much greater employment and wages, greater variety of goods, better services, etc. But also a higher cost of living. Sounds like they want the former....without the latter.

I am and yes that is me and it doesn't change the fact that the haves play games with our economy... There is a difference in capitalism and those with money driving economic policy for their own benefit... Sorry you cannot see that...

I think they do the exact opposite in Ireland. Tourism is down because of all the migrants that have flooded in and the locals are pissed.

Take away tourism and the cities crumble from lack of revenue. Who do you think eats in the restaurants, shops, pays for transportation, etc?

Tell that to a hard working local who lived a decent or better life preCovid making 30,000 Euros a year. But now can barely get by.

Post Covid all these rich foreigners inflated the housing and other local prices to the point where the locals have trouble getting by, much less ahead.

Transportation worked fine preCovid. Now it’s overrun with tourists

Barcelona suffers from the socialist fantasy of everything always happening at someone else's expense. There's always more to the story:

quote:

“The reasons for the housing crisis are very simple: Too much demand and too little supply – which is limited in Barcelona for structural reasons. You have the sea and the mountain, and there’s not much land in between.”

Spain is pretty left, and Barca is worse. For all the hand wringing about local shops closing for bubble tea shops and burger joints (maybe Spaniards like these things too,) there was absolutely no shortage of "traditional" shops, anywhere. As others have touched on, there is a complete disconnect between the majority left wing populace between low skill immigration and housing availability and wage suppression.

quote:

In order to address the housing crisis, new rental regulations were enforced to try and plug the swell of tourists and the subsequent surge in tourist rental accommodation like Airbnb. However, this has had unprecedented negative consequences for landlords. For the past six years, the minimum length of long-term rental contracts has been increasing and now stands at up to seven years. Tax deductions for landlords have been reduced and evicting tenants is more complicated than ever. Short-term holiday rentals are moving closer towards being obsolete as rent controls are firmly on the agenda. Spain introduced a new Housing Law earlier this year, which affected Catalonia: it was granted the freedom to cap rent prices of properties where they were considered unaffordable in relation to typical income. This affected around a quarter of the region including Barcelona. Small landlords with five properties or less can only raise rents per annum by a maximum of 3%.

These measures generated a heavy backlash with many regarding the legislation as unconstitutional and punitive against landlords. Francisco Iñareta of Idealista, a real estate firm said: “They are seen as the cause of the rental problem, when really they are the most important part of the solution.” He added: “Rent control and punitive measures against landlords not only fail to improve access to rental housing but also destroy the market.”

quote:

Deterred by poor incentives for renting, there is the fear that landlords will leave the market altogether – backfiring completely. When landlords and investors become disincentivised, say “adiós” to property provision for Spanish residents.

Ultimately, there are plenty of big cities, and tons of smaller ones, within 50 miles of Barca, where people could live the Med life if they so chose. Like those of us that have to live 20+ miles from metro downtown for schools, yards, etc., everyone has a choice.

So capitalism sets the prices?

Not the demand by tourists?

Stay in hotels when you

I own a house and 2 apartments in Istria Croatia. The house will be my retirement spot in aprox 2-3 years, but the apartments are and will be for income. Until I move permanently the house is rental property. I am sorry, but I do not want anyone staying at hotels when they can use my property.

Many of these people will bemoan other western tourists, but deep down they know that eliminating the busloads of Chinese tourists who don’t eat at the restaurants and don’t buy anything but garbage trinkets eliminates 95% of what they are complaining about.

Their countries, their choice. If they dont want outsiders coming in, I dont blame them.

But as already mentioned, to be so supportive of non-compatible immigration and so against tourism is just nonsensical.

I thought you didn't care about topics that didn't happen in North America?

I think it's difficult to compare these places to anywhere in the States.

Lisbon has a population of circa 550k, they had circa 12m tourists in 2023 (average of the differing figures I've seen)

Venice population is 250k and they had nearly 6m tourists

NO metro area shows as 1.3m and had 17m.

Percentage wise it's much bigger but also in much smaller areas it is felt harsher too. NO density is 311 people per square mile, Venice is 1,600 and Lisbon is over 5,400 per square mile. Old school European cities aren't built for so many people.

I suspect their main issue is that the housing market is completely destroyed for locals, everywhere is at bursting point from an infrastructure point.

However, this seems more like a typical French protest than the wider issue. I've been to the Louvre and the Mona Lisa was pretty underwhelming as much as anything because the absolute crush around it was ridiculous. The rest of the museum was fine.
