Go work for the Red Cross so you can feel better about yourself. My wife and aren't even close to the top 5% but I think we are top 13%. I want to keep every dime of mine that I can. I'd write off my damn dry cleaning if it would save me $10 on my taxes

Are you just going to ignore the issue and allow the dems to lock on to that HUGE population of voters for the next 20 year's?
That's your play?
I would. And, I'd play the other side of that coin politically. I'd play the millenials are evil card and pit boomers and gen x voters against millenials. I'd point out that younger generations are much smarter and don't seem to be having the same problems.
Your approach is exactly what sunk the republican party in the first place. You are willing to agree to anti-conservative policy because you think it is politically beneficial and just as important, too big of a pussy to stand up and make your case against it.

I can live with a hit to my--and this is important: other people in the 1%'s--pocketbook if it means a broad swathe of less fortunate people don't have to worry about going to the fricking doctor, or find that their rich counterparts have once again found more loopholes/cons to further increase their wealth. I work in corporate America in NY. I promise that myself and all the other skyscraper people I work with in the city aren't doing anything additive to this world. We're good at generating profits for our boards. That's not anything to be proud of, so the absolute LEAST we should all do is shoulder some burden. In reality, the richest people just have the richest accountants who find ways to evade taxes. You lot seem to find this a good thing. I find it repulsive. Bernie is a check against that.

Slow day at the office today so I spent a shite load of time on TD. I've seen several Bernie Bros claim to be wealthy and that they are voting against their own self interests because it's the right thing to do

Why, then, are you making an ostensibly obscene amount of money in the service of your Manhattan overlords?
I taught in inner-city schools and later at the college level. I made subsistence-level wages, and couldn't make ends meet, so I jumped ship to a useless career in advertising. It's fun, light on stress, and it pays hilariously well, but me, my coworkers, and the other fricks in this city (bankers and consultants) in similar situations are not additive members to society. I've made peace with that, but I'm not okay with how shite goes down in these circles in terms of strong-arming/bribing lawmakers to get favorable legislation passed and evasive, vaugely legal tactics to hide/shift money around to further enrich ourselves. This isn't something weird aberration, either, it's fricking systemic. Most rich people view paying as little taxes as possible as a game. We all know it.
I'd love to live in a world where everyone well-off (or even moderately successful) felt compelled out of a sense of moral duty to give away their fair share to help others, but the reality is that most people are fricking selfish. So it won't work if you rely on charity. Never will.
So Bernie is a tool to chip away at that. Ultimately he'll probably fail because power has already been too consolidated globally, but it's better than just going the Trump route of every man for himself in a rigged system.

Do you know how much it actually costs to fix up a “fixer upper” if you’re not a contractor? I’m not saying painting the walls, I mean actual fixing up of houses. It’s not what Chip and Joana quote.

Milennials simply have no idea on how to recognize real potential and invest in something that doesn't bring immediate gratification.
What generation are you? Tell me one generation, one, that was more patient than their parents about anything.
I’m not going to say millennials have it rough, or that times are hard. I’m a millennial and my life is fricking great. I’m married with two kids, a house, two dogs and I have an awesome job that pays me extremely well.
But then I see people on here just absolutely trashing posters like myself and scruffy who aren’t complaining but objectively stating facts like cost of living has increased faster than real wage growth or that small towns generally don’t have the population, infrastructure, or industries to support family and career development or growth, all of the responses are X’ers and boomers coming back with, I did it why can’t you do it the exact same way.
A lot millennials aren’t complaining, we just realize there are a lot of people in our generation that see this unwavering, iron clad response of frick you we won’t work with you at all, and then people wonder huh, why do they think differently than me.

This isn't a dick measuring contest. I don't know any of you, nor will I ever. I don't need to flex to strangers. I do, however, love chiming in to frick up your worldview that Bernie Bros are all broke freeloaders. That's patently false, and I'm only one example of that.

You nailed it !
We have become the party of pussies. Republicans like to cave.
I think all of the "conservatives" on here who agree with forgiving this debt , are either not really conservatives but like to think they are , or they still owe money (or a close relative owes money) and want a handout but are ashamed to admit it.
Our country has become pure filth.

The biggest difference I've seen between a far-left person and a far-right is whom you want to pay more taxes. The left wants rich peeps to pay more (or even at least the same percentage as the middle class!) and the right wants poor people to pay more.

quote:This "fact" is annoyingly false. Here's a stats pro-tip for ya. If the govt is issuing you a stat that is completely at odds with the economic reality outside your house, you should look closer. Here's why.
but objectively stating facts like cost of living has increased faster than real wage growth
Bottom line, when talking about wage growth, stagnation, or shrinkage, the question is simple. "How far do my wages go now than they used to......or not"
People want you to believe that the answer is "less far" but literally NOTHING in what is happening in real life jibes with this.
People 20, 30, 40 years ago ALL lived in less square footage. Were less likely to own a home etc etc
They were less likely to have air-bags, ABS etc etc on their cars.
NONE of them owned cell phones. I could go on and on. But, I'll go back to cars for a minute because they and homes illustrate the stupidity of the oft cited stat.
People act like when they compare "today's" home or car to those of 30 years ago that just because the things have the same name, we're talking about actually the same product. NO NO NO. You are NOT talking about the same product.
If eggs cost more now than in 1980 that's inflation because an egg is an egg is an egg.
But, if you drive by what was the "rich" are when I wasin HS, aside from the homes being old now, you'll notice something else. EVEN NEW, they'd be considered "meh" by today's standards. They damned sure wouldn't be the doctor's homes today.
If wages were REALLY lower now than before, then none of this shite could happen. Real estate prices couldn't boom while people simultaneously owned TONS of shite they didn't even know would exist in 1980.
You've been lied to so often, you bought it despite all evidence in real life being at odds with the lie you're being told.

and the right wants poor people to pay more.
But it's obvious you don't actually know anything about taxes, so there's that.

Are there no ramifications to taking this money from the people ? (yes the rich are still people)
I'm for a flat rate of 15% for all man kind. But I'm going to assume you don't support that.
