Putin was the head of the KGB. He's nothing but a huge POS. And as the former head of one of the most thug-filled organizations in the world, he's a huge thug as well. As I see it, Russia has been (and always will be) paranoid that the Western Nations want to seize their lands and wealth from Russia.
Rightfully, Western nations fear the Russians will roll westward and do exactly as the Russians fear of the west.
In a utopian way, both sides should be able to reach a detente, an equilibrium of sorts, to where each is on equal footing, and where each is free to govern their own countries as their population sees fit to elect.
Unfortunately, this war, and others before it, is based on fear that one country will usurp the other's sovereignty. Our government knows this, and has used Ukraine to taunt and provoke Ivan to the degree that Russia's natural distrust and overwhelming fear has taken over their sensibilities.
There are senior government employees, today, who are going to be landing cushy board positions at Raytheon, Lockheed, BAE, L3Harris, etc.. as a result of this war.
