Even AP News seems to have the fatigue: AP News
quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Don’t tune into the Super Bowl hoping for a break from the tumultuous politics gripping the U.S.
The NFL is facing pressure ahead of Sunday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots to take a more explicit stance against the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement. More than 184,000 people have signed a petition calling on the league to denounce the potential presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Super Bowl, which is being held at Levi’s Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area. The liberal group MoveOn plans to deliver the petition to the NFL’s New York City headquarters on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, anticipation is building around how Bad Bunny, the halftime show’s Spanish-speaking headliner, will address the moment. He has criticized President Donald Trump on everything from his hurricane response in his native Puerto Rico to his treatment of immigrants. On Sunday night, he blasted ICE while accepting an award at the Grammys. His latest tour skipped the continental U.S. because of fears that his fans could be targeted by immigration agents.

Missouri legalized sports gambling in 2024, it became legal to place a sports bet in December of 2025, so far, over $500 million of sports bets in MO in just 2 months. I bet a lot of those sports bets are from people who really can't afford to be losing money on gambling.

This ill be the first Super Bowl that I won't watch. I did not watch a single playoff game and I have not missed it at all.
You're not allowed to post this, you have to call it the Big Game or something lest you get sued by the NFL. See if you say that word, then happen to find a nickel on the ground the NFL will want you to give them 3 cents.

College football is not too far behind.

I haven't watched the Super Bowl since Covid happened. Unless the Saints are going to be playing. IDGAF.

In decline; they know it and going strong with more international games next year. Despite what fake news polls leads you to believe they are losing viewers. NFL ticket? Wouldn’t care if it was free.

Making more money yes. More viewers is debatable. Given the massive population increase in the USA over the last 40 years, the sport's popularity should be MUCH higher than they are now.
Kids are not as interested in sports these days. And immigrants (who represent most of the population increase) like soccer not "American football".
The NFL is popular and always will be regardless of its politics. But it is nothing like it was years ago when the whole culture seemed to orbit it. It does not have the same cultural impact it once did. IF they aren't careful they could move into niche territory like other sports have recently.

Your argument is the most popular American league/sport should be even MORE popular?

Do they? I haven't watched the NFL in over a decade now.
I'd like to see some sort of data supporting this. You may be right, but doesnt' sound right to me.

Also he says our overall culture has changed and moved away from sports, yet the NFL has become more popular/dominant, which argued my point.
The NFL and CFB are the gold standards, currently. Does this mean I like everything or every change in either? No. That's a dishonest association when discussing the comment centered around "killing the golden goose".

NFL viewership up 10% this season at 18.7M per game
The article has some staggering data on viewership.
quote:
All five of the league's weekly packages experienced viewer increases. Prime Video's "Thursday Night Football" had the biggest gains at 16%. CBS also had a double-digit increase at 11%. ESPN/ABC's "Monday Night Football" and NBC's "Sunday Night Football" were both up 9% and Fox had a 6% jump.
This was the most-watched NFL package on Thursday nights since the league started it in 2006. The 15.33 million average surpassed the 13.65 million from 2019, when the games were on Fox, NFL Network and Prime Video.
Since Prime Video started to be the exclusive home of "Thursday Night Football" in 2022, the audience has increased 60%. The first season averaged 9.58 million as audiences had to adjust to a regular package of games moving to a streaming service.
quote:
The Denver Broncos' win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas night averaged 21.06 million, breaking the network's 19.39 million mark for most-watched from the Dec. 4 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions.
CBS averaged 21.25 million, its best regular season on record and the highest average among the networks.
The network's national late afternoon games averaged 25.83 million, the third straight year it has defeated Fox in that window.
The Thanksgiving Day game between the Chiefs and Cowboys averaged 57.23 million, making it the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history. According to Nielsen, the game generated 11.7 billion viewing minutes on Nov. 27 and was the top broadcast telecast of the month. By comparison, "Stranger Things" on Netflix totaled 11.8 billion viewing minutes across the entire month since it was available on demand.
quote:
The NFL also continues to be a huge driver for streaming packages.
In October data, Nielsen said Peacock saw a 16% viewing increase, Paramount Plus was up 8% from September and Prime Video had a 6.4% average of TV viewing on Thursdays.
Also keep in mind, this is all live viewing.

Yes. Absolutely. You must be young. You aren't getting that the NFL was such an unreal cultural force back in the day. It dominated everything.
That is no longer the case. Two things can be true at once: 1) they have gotten wealthier and remain the most popular sport. and 2) they aren't the cultural force the entire country wraps itself in anymore.

Other than you're SFP, I don't know why you're getting downvoted. The NFL is absolute trash at this point, but it's pretty obvious that American popular culture demands trash. The NFL delivers. And through their delivery, comes continued success.
I think people should take a moment to look at the consumer. The NFL would stop their output of garbage if their base would stop consuming it.
For example, and to anyone who actually reads this comment: how many of you are going to protest the NFL by turning them off at halftime and then turning it back on for the start of Q3? How many of you are bitching about the selection of rabid anti-American artists Bad Bunny and Green Day as the halftime headliners, but your "protest" is to turn off the game for 20 minutes? Yeah, that'll show em!!
Signed, a guy who walked away from the NFL almost 20 years ago when Drew Knees and Colin Kaepernick helped turn the organization into a Marxist think tank.

I love the NFL today more than ever. It's amazing. I'm a little worried about the future of college football, but with that said the last season was also my favourite ever (even with LSU down).
Men who say they used to like football but don't anymore are weird as heck. It's better than ever. The catches, the aggressiveness on 4th and short. If you try to go back and watch a Saints game from 2009 it's like so stupid the way teams called plays and punt on 4th and 2 compared to today.

It still dominates everything.
As culture has become more spread out and there is much less of a mono culture, the NFL still reigns over American society.
The gap between the NFL, CFB, and #3 is larger now than in the past.

It was objectively the best playoffs I can remember in my 40 years of watching NFL (and neither of my fav teams (Saints and Bengals) were in). There's zero chance you watched the games and say with a straight face that it's "absolute trash"
