Democrats and Republicans up there are practically identical. Guns, Fish, Timber, Oil, Minerals, Cheaper goods, and tourism. You don't win w/o that platform.

what's funny is this lady literally wants to shutdown some of the world's largest offshore commercial fisheries with literally no scientific evidence to prove it.

If she also had her way, Federal public's lands in Alaska would only be open to and/or run by Native Alaskan tribes.

some people who voted for her are in for a rude awakening.

especially white folk that voted for her. She hates white people. Thinks they are colonizers...shes pretty damn woke.

shes like the absolute opposite of what most normal folk up in Alaska want in a representative. She got by in the election with a really really good PR campaign supported by Public Radio and Media Sources. She plays this super nice *shivers* moderate person. put she is completely the opposite. She fooled a buncha people who voted for her.

Are you confusing the Tina Fey impersonation with the actual person? You do know Gov Palin never said she could see Russia from her house, right?

Perhaps he's really a Democrat.

Ranked Choice voting system

Palin would have lost either way. If that many Begich voters put her last, they weren’t going to vote for her regardless.

Alaska is republican but not conservative. I forget the number but an insane % of the population gets some kind of government assistance.

It is also possibly the most politically corrupt state in the union.

It has awesome hunting and fishing though.

Your description of Alaska makes it sound very much like a larger and more isolated version of Louisiana.

That’s probably pretty accurate.

An oil driven economy with a large underclass and a corrupt political system.

to an extent it is. It's a bit more libertarian than LA.

It does have its differences though. Fedgov owns most of the land out there and has a couple of large military bases as well. Its a huge Federal government welfare state.

Welfare wise replace African Americans with Natives Alaskans. They get more welfare than anybody in LA though. They get free healthcare and also are waaaaay more prone to alcoholism/drug abuse/domestic violence. It's more in your face in Alaska.

How did that happen ?

It happened, because not unlike what happened in Alabama when Doug Jones was elected to the Senate, you had two prominent Republicans, neither of whom could put their fricking ego aside and throw their support to the other. The Democrat won with only 36.8%. Palin and the other Republican, Nick Begich, received a combined 56.4%.

yep. Which is inline with previous HofR elections before ranked choice voting was implemented.

Don Young typically won 55-45 in his elections.

The Republican vote was split by Alaska’s new “ranked choice” tabulation as only one Democrat ran. Palin will be back on the ballot in November for an election for the full term.

Once again, some GOP idiot will not step out of the way, while the Dems are aligned. Hopefully only one GOP runs in Nov.

since somebody bumped this. I tried to vocalize my opinions on reddit/r/alaska earlier and was downvoted so bad, I can no longer respond to anything on that subreddit

That pretty much explains why reddit is a liberal cesspool and worthless

The state Republican Party backed Begich.
