Thomas was replacing Thurgood. There was a pressure to replace Thurgood with another black person. How many young black conservatives were out there (especially in the early 90's) that had any sort of background for a Supreme Court appointment? Basically, he was looked at as the best available.
BUT, he was a long shot in the sense that we conservatives were very worried that once he got on the court that he would go left of Stevens.
In the end, he turned out to be a solid pick. But, I've always wondered if the crap the Dims put him through in the confirmation process hardened him as a conservative rather than a wishy-washy Kennedy clone.

But, of the four, he's the closest to Kennedy on the ideology specter. He's to the left of Alito, Gorsuch, and Thomas and likely on par with Roberts.
I'm not sure I agree with that. He's very Alito-ish on issues like the police power and Fourth Amendment.

If they were ever going to do it, now would be the time. Republicans hold the majority in the Senate along with some very politically vulnerable Democrats. Thanks to Harry Reid, there's not much realistic fight Democrats can put up. So assuming the Republicans wouldn't step on their own dicks (a HUGE assumption in its own right), now would be the time to act.

The Dem attack will be that the nominee is 'out of the mainstream'. That has no meaning at all. There are only 2 kinds of SC nominees:
a. The constitution should be interpreted as it was written by the founders.
b. The constitution means whatever the hell I want it to mean.
The two schools of thought are mutually exclusive. Therefore, you cannot choose a 'mainstream' or 'moderate' judge. Such a person merely feels 'a' on Mon,Wed and Fri and feels 'b' on Tue, Thur and Sat.

Why do you think Pryor didn't get more consideration?
