Mrs Completely is a medical professional, so I get “strongly encouraged” to get one.

Last time I had the flu was 25 years ago...then I got it 2 years in a row 2013-14. Took the shot every year since and it hasn’t happened again. Anecdotal, yes...but you start getting all kinds of shite when you’re pushing 50.

A whole thread of anecdotes
And imagine if people applied the same logic to things like unprotected sex and drunk driving as they do flu shots. Instead they usually talk about how lucky they were to not have gotten a DUI or in an accident when they drove drunk, or gotten an STD or had an unwanted pregnancy when they had unprotected sex.

The people who tend to die from the flu are at the extremes of age. However, young people also die from it every year due to complications or from reasons we don't completely understand.

I truly will never understand the public resistance to vaccines. If some excuse arises for people not to get one, they cling to it and don't relent.

Vaccines, in general, help 10,000x more people than they hurt. They are relatively inexpensive and painless and largely without side effects for the vast majority of people. And the proof of their efficacy is all around us. Ain't nobody dying of a host of old, terrible disease.

And yet... resistance.

The flu vaccine protects you as well as those around you with compromised immune systems. If it "doesn't work", it still may lessen the severity of your illness.

Most doctors would and should tell you to go out and get your damned shot.

I got one yesterday. Nurse told me this year they have really good vaccines. Mine covered 4 strains. I’m 65 so it’s important. I’ve gotten them every year since I was in my 40’s. I think they help. They also reduce the incidences and severity of ‘colds’. My doctor always told me it was crazy not to get one. I’ve never heard a doctor or nurse say not to get one, ever.

Friend almost died last year with that epidemic that hit the panhandle of Florida. And I almost went down for the count back when in my early 20's. The VA gives all us old boxheads one every year so I'm getting mine.

Chris Kresser Article
quote:

The news media report on this study might say:  Flu vaccine cuts your risk of getting the flu in half!  Now, that’s technically true because the risk relatively went down from 2% to 1%, but what they don’t tell you is that the absolute risk reduction went down from 2 in 100 to 1 in 100, which is an overall absolute risk reduction of 1%.  So this means that you’d need to treat approximately 100 people to prevent a single case of flu, or put another way, of 100 people that get the flu shot, 99 of them won’t benefit at all.

I never got one. I talked to my doctor about it years ago when he recommended I get one. I asked him if he gets them, he said no. Didn't get one, found a new doctor.

And if they reduced the LIFETIME relative risk of getting pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers, by 99.9999% the absolute risk reduction would be about 0.6%.

Going from about 1 and 160 odds of getting a highly deadly cancer to 1 and 161 million odds, would look ineffective by an absolute reduction.

And the flu odds are yearly.

I wonder who these doctors are. Doctor of chiropractic? Naturopathic doctor? These really aren't real doctors.

And I have no doubt one or two crazy real doctors are out there who say that. Let me tell you a joke that was told in medical school.

What do you call the person who graduated last in their class? The answer is doctor. There are lots of bad doctors out there.

You won't find a single good doctor saying you shouldn't get a flu shot.

Flu shots are not some sort of conspiracy and there's no reason not to get one, especially if they are included free in your insurance plans (like many do, including mine).

They are especially important for women who may get pregnant or elderly people.

Getting the flu while your pregnant can cause birth defects or miscarriage and for old people sometimes its fatal.

If you've ever had the flu extremely bad, reducing your chance from 2% to 1% still sounds like a great deal.

People say they get "the flu" all the time but they are usually full of it. I've had the actual honest to God flu twice in my life and it was twice too many.
