Because old Mrs. Myrtle didn't make the class read "Atlas Shrugged" this is why little Cindy is kneeling to Raz in the CHAZ.

I disagree, I would say, it's a result of generations of offspring with no fathers. 106 shot in Chicago, 14 fatally, I'll bet none of the shooters, came from anything even approximating a stable two parent home or had involved sane Dads.

I have an employee who told me that the reason they went after the Lincoln Memorial was because Lincoln was a founding father and a slave owner.

How do parents influence curriculum that is determined at the state and sometimes national level?

How does curriculum help a 20 year old speak proper English? I agree, this is the parents’ fault first, schools’ fault second, teachers’ fault third

America, and to some extent, all of the west, have done something heretofore unheard of. They've created education systems DESIGNED to get people to dislike their own country and culture.

I'm all for ensuring you don't just whitewash history. But, we went the other way. We basically portray America and Western Culture as the villain in an otherwise sea of model and peace loving cultures.

We ONLY hold up Western icons to today's values. So, Columbus and other first explorers are evil. Meanwhile, the cultures they bumped in to that practiced everything from slavery to human sacrifice are practically worshipped.

This happens in every aspect of our history lessons. And it's silly. I mean yes. Go ahead and teach the ugly truth about slavery. ALSO, teach how the frick slaves came in to our possession.

Go ahead and teach that we basically just moved west with little regard to the people's that were here on arrival. ALSO teach how those frickers couldn't wait to kill each other at the first opportunity for advantage. AND, that they were cultures that weren't exactly ones that ANYONE would like if we saw them today.

I teach my arse off daily. I teach both language and try to instill character. These threads get me so bummed though I know it’s directed more at higher education as far as the “communism” discussion. As far as the curriculum, we have no say. Our district spends tons of money on something they decided on (high ups who haven’t been in the classroom in years or ever), and when the teachers don’t like “turn the page” instruction and are threatened to use it or lose our job, the cycle continues.

ETA: Grammar is only allowed to be 25% of my students’ grades. I can correct them on the same grammar and punctuation mistakes over and over, but it doesn’t hurt their grade enough for them to care.

so you teach English and you cant figure out that you cant really teach it

is that what you are saying

so would you not be part of the problem of the systematic dumb ing down of the school aged student

or are you saying you are ok with wasting your time and complaining about it and doing nothinbg about it

This is the best post you've ever made on this site by a mile. I agree with it 1000%. Well done.

ETA: A few personal thoughts on education right now:

1. We have way, way too many college major choices. There is no reason to offer majors that won't lead to a good job other than more money. Which leads to point #2....

2. The cost of college has skyrocketed because of federally backed guaranteed student loans that can't be discharged in bankruptcy. Colleges jack up the prices because they know they will get paid no matter what.

3. Personal finance classes need to be mandatory in high schools throughout the country.

4. Colleges need to stop lowering admissions standards for athletes.

5. Our culture needs to stop making fun of kids who do well in school. There are kids out there who are capable of 4.0 GPAs who don't do it because they get made fun of for being nerds. This way of thinking needs to be done away with.

6. Teachers unions need to be abolished immediately. These unions make it impossible to fire shitty teachers who need to be fired.

Those schools don't suck because of the actual school buildings, or because of the teachers working there. They suck because the children going there are not supported or taught at home.

I agree to a certain extent, but I think there's a lot we could do to at least alleviate the situation. For one, teachers need much broader authority over discipline in their own classrooms. This whole "let the kids do whatever they want" tactic is stupid, we all know it but we can't say it because "racist". Also if we're going to have a child protective services department, instead of raiding people's homes because Karen saw her neighbor spank their child, why don't they find all the kids that show up to school in clothes they've been wearing for 3 days straight.

And yes, teachers can be a problem especially in places where they basically can't be fired, IE NYC.

The courts have not been helpful at all in allowing schools to discipline unruly students. Furthermore, they heap accommodation after accommodation on teachers to the point that they have to come up with five different worksheets for the same lesson.

The courts have made decisions that burden the schools with tasks that aren’t really their responsibility.

The public k-12 system is not brain washing kids. Teachers do the best they can with what they have to work with. Unlike private/charter schools we don't get to pick the kids we teach and can't kick them out when they prove to be difficult. Our public schools, even the good ones, are filled with kids who have severe behavior issues due to poor parenting or mental illness. Last year alone, I was physically assaulted at least twice weekly. So I would say the same thing to you as I would the protestors. Be the change you want to see in the world. Protesting isn't going to change much. You think the public schools are terrible, be a teacher. Some public schools are amazing. Some are terrible and it's usually due to bad parenting, not the curriculum.

Schools not being able to discipline little pieces of shite because their worthless parents won't do it is a HUGE problem.

Pull your kids out of these brainwashing centers. No excuses, don't care how inconvenient it is, pull them out

The public schools have one primary mission - Indoctrinate. They are doing a fine job of that, and, so, the Ruling Leftist Zeitgeist will not "frick with" anybody or anything about the US public school system.

Academia is churning out Radical Leftist Revolutionaries right now. The Democratic Party has Academia exactly where they need it to be.

It started to decline when kids starting having kids. Can’t help your kids and be involved in their class work if you never learned it to begin with.
