As usual, it backfired.
By pulling this stunt, they focused everyone's attention to the fact that:
a) the Mueller prosecutors LIED to DOJ about what they intended to recommend to the Court for sentencing
b) that the Judge committed clear error in the jury selection process
c) that because of (b), the jury had at least 3 hyper-partisan Dems (including the foreperson)
By pulling this stunt, they focused everyone's attention to the fact that:
a) the Mueller prosecutors LIED to DOJ about what they intended to recommend to the Court for sentencing
b) that the Judge committed clear error in the jury selection process
c) that because of (b), the jury had at least 3 hyper-partisan Dems (including the foreperson)

If Roger Stone were my client and had it come the sentencing and he got between 7 - 9, all known factors considered (in my mind, mostly lack of criminal history, non-violent offense, age of defendant).....good chance my mouth would overrun my arse and I'd be led jail on contempt of court. Choice words for prosecution and judge. It's that outrageous. As Dershowitz said, a great portion of that outrageousness was due to the "trial penalty" i.e. how dare you actually question the government's case and exercise your right to go to trial. You dare step on their pride, they'll make you pay for it, those noble gentlemen who courageously withdrew from the matter in protest. In reality, for those who experience it, it's less courageous and more of a sissy bitch move.

How would Trump abuse his power commenting on the sentence when he has the absolute authority to commute whatever sentence Stone gets or issue a pardon. It’s a dumb talking point/accusation by Dems, but aren’t they all.
