Nuclear fusion.
Pipe dream.
Just another government boondoggle.
See global cooling and the coming ice age, mid-70s.
See global warming, mid-80s.
See climate change, early 90s to now.
See ozone hole, mid-90s to now.
Get the point?

I disagree.
In order for fusion to work you need more energy out than in.
Currently they are achieving steady state plasma fusion for 50 microseconds.
To be profitable they need to achieve 2 seconds of steady state plasma before needing more energy input. (Then the cycle repeats).
The beauty of TAE's fusion reactor is it conducts electricity directly from three alpha particles unlike other designs where boiling water is required to spin a turbine. 1 proton plus boron (11) fuses to form an intermediate carbon (12) which splits into three alpha particles (4 each) after losing their electric charge are harmless helium.
Maybe I'm buying into the hype but the private investment gives me a lot of optimism about the technology.

A short term problem. However, AI did solve global warming so you got to think net victory.

It was never a problem, but let Greta and AOC think it was a problem AI solved.

A lot of hand wringing in this thread as usual on the subject of technology.

It was solved because tech bros chose their data centers with massive power consumption over global warming. The algorithms did nothing. Notice how the rhetoric has waned?

How will the “AI” companies afford to run themselves if there isn’t money flowing in from the economy to, in turn, run their data centers?
That stock implosion will be HUUUUUUGE!!

Wow, good thing we were forced to switch to dystopian LED bulbs to save energy.

So how do you conduct electricity directly through a 6,000 K plasma to a conductor to transmit electricity to the grid?
Don’t buy the hype.
It is a boondoggle.

This is a pet peeve of mine. Everyone focuses on oil but low cost electricity is every bit as important. The cost just to power a house today is ridiculous and the restrictions due to green energy bullshite have only made it worse.
The same morons that caused a reduction in electricity production are all in on data centers and EVs.

There should be no open loop sytems used for cooling. We have serious water issues now.

If we finally get fusion because of AI's power demands, that will be the equivalent of 10x Apollo programs as far as a boon to mankind. Maybe more than 10x.

From one proton (1) and one boron (11) matter is fused to make an intermediate carbon (12) which is split into three charged alpha particles: 1P + (5P+6N) ---> 6P+6N -----> 3(2P +2N)
Because the charged alpha particles are moving near the speed of light they are then sent past a magnetic field. When a charged particle moves past magnetic field they are slowed down and electricity is produced. The kinetic energy of the charged particle is reduced because its velocity is reduced and some of the kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy.
This is a different concept than producing heat to boil water then produce steam to spin a turbine.

I guess you've never traveled between NOLA and BR along River Road or Hwy. 61.

So what’s the temperature of the charged particles when they leave the magnetic field? What material can be used to contain them? You have about 118 elements to choose from along with combinations thereof.
I say again. Boondoggle.
