- The post highlights January 2026 BLS data showing a net loss of 42,000 government jobs (including 34,000 federal) and 172,000 private-sector gains, aligning with Trump's efficiency agenda and contributing to federal employment at its lowest since 1966, per OPM records visualized in the attached graph.
- This reflects broader 2025-2026 workforce reductions of about 220,000 federal positions, saving an estimated $22 billion annually based on average salaries, though critics note total nonfarm job growth of 130,000 was below expectations amid revisions lowering prior months' figures.

Trump is looking out for us Americans. Another war in the Middle East and high tariffs!

Will that pay for the 500 billion MORE in defense spending?

First of all, no "rate" was shown in the chart. It was numbers of employees.

They should show that whole chart through 1966, though.

FRED graph

I have pointed out for years that government employment is vastly lower than people think it is - it's been more or less constant for decades even as population has massively surged.

The usual riposte is "yeah, but what about contractors". And I see no mention here of Trump getting rid of any contractors.

Sounds like you hate it here. I'd love to help you pack to move out of the country (for free). Hell, I'll even pay for your ticket if you renounce your citizenship. Deal?

We need spending to come down, not just the work force.

That’s fantastic. Well, it sucks for the unemployed but get your arse in the private sector and help the economy out.

And somehow, he's still managed to increase the deficit! Impressive, really.

And? During Trump's first term, federal employment was at like 1975 levels. We could have had a thread then: "Trump fed employment hits lowest since 1975". Of course that would have been true for every president before him too. The entire point is it's actually just not that high to begin with...unless you want to make the contractor argument. But again, I see no mention of contractors here. Is Trump going to be terminating lots of contractors?

They're a bunch of fricking bitches. Trump has spent his entire time in office rolling back federal regulations and shrinking government and these idiots still bitch about him every day. He's the most libertarian leaning president we have ever had.

While positive, this is meaningless in a vacuum. Otherwise they are just moving spending from one category to the next.

If you get rid of a government employee pushing paper, but hire a contractor to push the same paper, it's not that much better.

Overall spending is the only way to judge.
