China’s goal is to use Trump’s tariffs to try and score sweetheart deals with nations like the EU, Australia, Canada, and UK to isolate the US. The thought process is that if China can poach these customers before they cave to the U.S., they can force the U.S. to break first. All of the major economic players are engaged in serious real politik and economic brinksmanship right now to see who will win.

So in no way possible can you imagine Trump may have made a mistake?

Sure that is possible. But given that China has been taking from the American middle class for the last few decades, it is great that some politician is opposing in some way their economic undermining of the majority of Americans.

I am sure you want to say, “…but our $10 shirts…”, spare me.

Trump won't back down. They should not understate him. China is hoping public sentiment will force him to back down.....Hello China...he doesn't do that. China does not have that problem. What the CCP says, goes.

In reading this thread the thought occurred to me that part of the deal with China could include an agreement not to invade Taiwan for a number of years and still giving them some concessions on the trade

this is true.

But I doubt either "folds" outright. Too much ego, too much political capital, terrible negotiating.

Right now Xi is saying we won't negotiate. And Trump is saying if you won't, all your friends will (or that's what he's gambling on).

So there's no folding, they just finally negotiate. What Xi is doing is a time honored tactic of making just starting to talk "progress". Trump is just matching him. So when they do talk, both can claim wins.

I think it might've been Mao or some other Chinaman who said this...The only thing you need to do to keep the Chinese people from revolting is keep a bowl of rice on every table.

So to answer your question. They could probably endure a lot more than us.

While true in the past, a significant portion of their population is far beyond living on a bowl of rice per day.

Which in part is why China has been shedding mfg for years, to cheaper countries like Vietnam.

This is Saber rattling we have needed for over 30 years.

Financial war. China buying off how many in DC? China has their propaganda in colleges with confucious centers that were closed.

Someone ask AI who provides USA antibiotics.

Didn't we depend on someone for ventilators?

“Chicom”, singular. It's one man with a bunch of sycophants blowing smoke. He believes all of his ideas are ingenious. He’s about to find out.

Trump can't fold, that's for sure he's to take the hand to the conclusion. Trump cannot afford to be a chump.

I think Trump is going to make a move that gives Xi a way out, but still save face with his people in doing so. Right now it's China's move, but Trump could offer something, or he plays out the hand to conclusion.

He has proven this multiple times already. He is our Lion.

Through the geopolitical lens, it is do or die time because what we set in motion today will dictate our future.

That is an absolute fact. They will renegotiate a lesser tariff and also reciprocate with lower tariffs. They cannot substitute enough trade with Russia and India combined to make up for what they would lose in the U.S.

First.. Trump is not going to try to embarrass Xi in public so when and if they come to an agreement, Trump will make damn sure that it was a mutual agreement and the USA/China relationship is now the strongest ever.
