He jumped it early for me. I remember him as a kid being a cringe figure covered on the Robin Leach's Lifestyles of the Rich and famous. I never watched the Apprentice, so really lost track of him for awhile until he started getting amplified on social media where he was doing things that play well on social media but flag you as an unstable or sociopath IRL. The best people to help you understand Trump were the NY press who had already covered him for 30 years when he broke into politics and nailed his PT Barnum schtick from the jump and once I read Tim O'Brien, Kurt Anderson, Graydon Carter, David Caye Johnston, Wayne Barrett, etc, it started to click.

Served his country in a valiant way, got into public service, probably hung around too long in DC, but 80% of his positions were right-of-center.

Trumpists had to make McCain into a hate-object because he was the archetype traditional Republican that Trump was the foil for. He was personally brave, showed care for his fellow soldiers, had things he cared about besides self-aggrandizement and spectacle. He had to be demonized.
