I think the natural tendency is to get bigger and ours is certainly moving in that direction but I don’t think it’s because we are growing in population. It’s mostly due to candidates needing to be elected and the low hanging fruit is to tell people how their problems will be solved by government.
quote:What theory? That more government is needed as population density increases? If so, I'll ask again; if North America was populated only by 100 people do you think they would need stop signs?
Your theory is Hobbesian and decidedly unAmerican.

This "expert" of yours is shite, no matter how eloquent.
Well, that's the realm of opinion and values. The bet was that he didn't know what a woman was, which he clearly does.
But there you go. You just proved there is actually no reason to listen to points of view from outside of your eco chamber.

It's pretty damn close to a fact, both logically and observationally.

I don’t disagree. But again, I don’t think that government programs are really rooted in empathy or compassion.
More based in greed and power.
For the record I’m not suggesting we need democrats and republicans. I think democrats are a scourge that need to be driven from polite society. It’s just the ideals that are commonly associated with liberal and conservative that I am saying are necessary to the American cocktail.

Not sure I agree, and the reason I say that is because it all depends on what you mean when you make that statement.
I could easily come up with a list of conclusions that a leftist would think would be self-evident from that statement that you would not.
So perhaps the way I phrased my thought was not the best, but I stand by the essence of what i was trying to say.

But why?
There's a difference between needing something and always getting it. I've never thought about this before so would like to see the logic behind a need for more gov't the denser a population gets.

I think the most bizarre points of the left are sick. I wouldn't call it evil. The point I'm making, that you seem deaf to, is that you define the entire left that way, when in fact most of them do not believe this. You go even further when you anathematize me; you throw half the right into the bucket of evil deplorables.
Can't you see that you are behaving as a right wing Hillary Clinton? Worse than Hillary. Hillary said there was a large portion of the right who were deplorables. She allowed that there were some well-meaning right wing folks. You throw the whole left into the deplorable bucket, and you trump Hillary by throwing in all the right wing folks, like me, who don't agree that they are all deplorable.

I mean you don't have to look beyond the basics like water and waste to understand that as the population density grows the need for a collective solution grows with it. You aren't putting an apartment building on a well and a septic tank.

I think what you mean when you say government is more accurately expressed as order. Which is not the same as government although the former is an expression of the desire for the latter.
Government is not necessary to have a stop sign.

And I think there are more stop signs per capita in rural areas than urban. That's an intuitive guess. Maybe someone knows?

I think the distinction here is that Trump supporters don’t care if the establishment repeatedly labels Trump a Nazi.
I appreciate the distinction and will concede that it applies to some "Trump supporters" (again, depending upon what that means), but surely you've read enough of this board to know that what I said also applies to some "Trump supporters."
There are some people out there who—if it were proven that Trump was a Nazi, as in this example—would respond by rationalizing that the Nazis were misunderstood and misrepresented by the media and are actually not bad people.
The distinction you made is quite vulnerable to the true Scotsman fallacy, and some (if not many) "Trump supporters" love that particular fallacy to death.

No, your unbiased "expert" is a fool.
Biden is actively promoting the destruction of the country, that is inarguable.
Anyone who sees the invasion at the Southern border and says Biden is doing a good job, is an idiot, credentials be damned.
Capitulating to bad people in the name of getting along is a fools' game.

I’m not so naive to believe that there aren’t some who might like him more.
But look at the left and Ukraine. It’s very well established that a great many of them are car carrying Nazis and the want to send them billions we don’t have.

The truth is that as populations become denser they need more government, and ours - in fact, the whole world - is becoming denser.
No Republican would ever say this or deduce people so easily.
Only an over educated non-religious Democrat would make that statement. Why? Because governemnt is their religion.
Our Founders never intended our Government to be the Bonus Parent for every individual.

I think your per capita distinction is valid. I work with a lot of rural communities in my job and it seems like the ONLY money available in rural communities is via the government.

I read Yglesias every day. I am not going to try to give you his essay long case, but I’ll tell you the flaw that I see in it; it’s that he neglects the harm that has been done by inflation. He thinks that just because inflation has come way down that the harm is over.
You can't create a problem and then take credit for the solution and tell me you know what the frick you are doing.
The regulatory policies by the Left create havoc in the economy to appease their rabid base, and then they massage their narrative towards the other side by telling you the problem has been addressed.
Simple example. You raise inflation by 5 points. It comes down 2 points. It's still 3 points higher than it was. You don't get credit for that 2 point decrease. That's data and messaging manipulation.
That's Democrat policy politics simplified for you.
Just stop fricking believing them. They lie about everything. Republicans are not the solution, but Democrats are definitely the cause. Once we get to this majority line of thinking maybe we can at least get people elected that will care what WE think.
Period.

To that:
1. That is an opinion, not a fact
2. It all depends on what you mean by that
3. Even if we accept it as being valid, that doesn't mean we need more FEDERAL government
It's a fact, not just an opinion. I'll post this for the third time...if North America was populated by only 100 people would they need stop signs?
Your third point - that it needn't be FEDERAL government is valid and one I feel very strongly about. All government should be devolved away from the center and as close to the people as possible.
In your last point you allege that anyone who supports abortion is evil. I'm against abortion, so maybe not evil in your view (whew!), but I see that issue as especially troublesome. The idea that a woman can't control her own body is almost as repugnant to me as the idea that an infant in the womb can be killed - ALMOST. So I understand that some view it the other way. They say that the object in the womb is not a human baby; it is a fetus. That is the only way they can be on the side of a woman's right to choose. The radicals on their side think you are evil for wanting to circumscribe women's freedom. I think they are just as misled as you. Both of you call about half the people in America evil.

You must have missed the posts addressing this -
Wouldn't a 10,000 square mile county with a population of 10,000 have more stop signs than a city of 100,000 people laid out over 10 square miles?
I'm still interested in the logic behind the assumption that there's a need for more government the denser a population gets.
