"With all due respect," Daniel Pepi says, "I'm still Mexican, and continue to love my country, but right now, my jersey is that of the United States."

No shite, sherlock.
It's an awesome quote because it's from his dad. It would be a terrible quote if it was from Ricardo.

Both were great reads. Thanks for posting! Seems like a great kid with an awesome support system.

Don’t see the awesomeness in the quote, but to each his own.

Imagine being this lame.

I didn't enjoy the article too much. The author wrote like he had a random adjective generator and made himself too much of a story. The story itself is good though

It’s like if my child played for Alabama. I’d always be an LSU grad and fan, but I’d support my son.
It’s not that much of a stretch in my opinion.
Or, if my son, because of his mother, played for the Jamaican national team. I’d always be American, but I’d support him and his team.
Really can’t comprehend why you chose that quote out of that novel of a mediocre ESPN write up.
Thanks for posting nonetheless.

The Bama/LSU rivalry and the lines crossed are nothing compared to El Tri/USMNT rivalry.
There is so much more that goes into it.

Wow, you're really mad about this.

When I first read that quote I thought it was a Ricardo quote too…. which obviously would have been weird.

Here's another excerpt on the subject from the Athletic article. Seems like a perfectly human connection to both their heritage and the country and home that gave them the opportunity and success that family has worked hard for all these years. I think Ricardo is extremely proud to play for the USMNT.
quote:
“Between my wife and myself, we always told him that decision was going to be his,” explained Daniel. “He grew up watching Mexican soccer. If you were to ask me, personally, it would have been my dream to see him play for the Mexican national team. That was my league. Those were my players. That was my national team. That was my dream. That’s not his.
“He was born here. … All the opportunities to be where he’s at right now has been through the U.S. I’m Mexican, but I love the U.S., as well. This is where I’m doing my life. This country has helped me sustain my family. I love America. I love the United States. Even though I’m Mexican.”
Ricardo said every day he exists in both cultures: “Outside of my house, I feel like I’m American, but in my house, it’s all Mexican inside my household.”

Picture of him with his parents after tonight’s match has his mom in a US jersey and his dad in FC Dallas gear. Which is a way of wearing US colors without wearing US gear. That’s pretty funny. It’s hard to alter your loyalties, but this kid is going to have a long US career and his dad will be a huge US fan in the end. He’ll end up being pissed at Mexico NT over something they do I’m sure.

Yep, when the Mexican fans pepper his son with piss and beer at Azteca he may change his mind.

Exactly. It was kinda odd and off-putting. I must have skipped through half the article which was just filler on the writer's own personal thoughts.
