These announces are nauseating. If we truly want to be competitive then expectations need to be raised. This wasn’t good enough. We missed easy give me shots and the defense got abused. Call it what it is. A disappointment. And demand better.

I mean, we were never going to win the World Cup. We showed well today, but Holland was definitely more clinical in the final third.

Great post. Just getting out of the group stage should not be seen as a success anymore. That should be the baseline standard.

Lalas must have some high quality kneepads on underneath that suit

But this wasn’t a World Cup for us to win, it was to get our young arse team experience after the colossal failure of missing 2018. 2026 is the year where there are no more moral victories.

Love how they kept emphasizing “8 in the world rankings” and “best team to never win WC”

When yesterday it was “beatable Dutch side”

We don’t have a quality striker. Until we do, our squad will be severely limited.

On the flip side, we are set at every other position. Ream is easily replaced with young CB talent.

We will be deeper in 2026 with guys that aren’t even on our radar.

I think Greg is weak on in game tactics but he is proven at recruiting and motivating a national team.

I sure get it but frankly without a true 9 do you think we can ever consistently get past the knockout stage? I don’t.

If we had a Memphis type player this team would have been considered pretty deadly by many I think.

Dutch squad filled with finishers. The US has none. Sad reality for a team with so much talent, ball control, and great passing. Even if you accept the missed defensive assignments and 3 goals conceded as the Dutch just being outstanding when it mattered, the US should have had this at 3-3 with the scoring opportunities they had.

This.

Are we not allowed to look at the youngest squad to make the knockouts and the youngest squad to play a knockout round for the USA and say damn we did well against a superior opponent and should be proud?

The goal of this team was to change the way the world views American soccer. They 100% did this.

Pulisic, Adams, Musah, Dest, Weah, McKennie, et al are a level above the technicality we typically produce. The future is bright for this team, and I’m looking forward to it.

This is all they’re missing. Let’s hope there is some young cat out there ready to elevate his game and become that guy.

Totally agree. We’ve made the round of 16 several times now in recent world cups. This should be the expectation in American soccer. Losing in the first knockout round should be a disappointment, not some moral victory.

Not arguing the Dutch are better just that we didn’t play well at all. Longer term we have got to get our athletes playing and we can’t do that if the expectation is that the USA isn’t supposed to dominate. That should be the actual stated mission. Not be competitive. To fricking dominate.

Raise the bar.

Agreed.
We have the most European players EVER in a US side and the constant talk about “trash”players, is ridiculous.
Watch soccer more than every four years and shut the frick up (not you, the idiots in the game thread).
We’re young and went up against a superior coach who tactically took away our best assets. Plain and simple.

By not scoring and losing in the round of 16 once again?

It's obvious the talent is better, and there is some creativity on the field, but no one has any fear of a barrage of USA goals.
