France missed the WC in 1994 and won it all in 1998. Netherlands went decades without a WC and became the team of the 70s. Getting knocked down like that is a wake up call.

I don't think people realize how big today is. A lot of soccer die hards baghdad bobbing over this.

France started building that in 1988 when they reorganized their youth system completely, setting up 12 regional academies across the country, including one of the best ever schools for the sport in Clairefontaine. Without massive investment, that won't happen here. The top down structure of the USSF is set up perfectly to do such an endeavor though.

The bigger issue is losing the casual fans for good. The die hards will be back during the next cycle

Nah... those are the types that only come around for the WC anyway...

The popularity of the sport is being built through the easy access to watch the best club leagues in the world.. week in and out...
