This...I never do excursions through the cruise lines. If you take a bit of time to read reviews, etc., you can do better excursions for the same or less money with a lot less people.

Just something to note - a major con to not booking excursions through the cruise line is that the cruise ship will absolutely not wait if you're running late if on an independent excursion and will leave you there on the dock if not back at all board departure time.

Of course that's true. However, every legitimate tour will ensure you are back on time or they will promise to get you to your next port. It's not people on legit tours that are pier runners...it's folks who spent too much time on the beach or a bar. Tours get you back EARLY! Cruise lines harp on this to scare you into taking their more expensive tours with TONS of other people.

Agree - certainly a large portion of pier runners are normally just very intoxicated and lost track of time.
Just passing along a comment.

I did an excursion through the cruise line years ago in Mexico (visiting one of the ruins) where it was a 2-2.5 hour bus drive each way and on the way back the bus broke down. By the time we made it back to the pier, we were about 45 minutes past the departure time. Even with a "legit" tour that was not booked through the cruise line, the ship would've left and it would've been a huge pain in the arse. Not to mention, I believe that was the last port before heading back home.

It's not unlimited. It's 15 drinks a day. It sounds like alot until you get on board and start drinking. Also once you hot the limit you can't even buy a drink. You're cut off until it resets at I think 6am. Other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean are truly unlimited.

Exactly. It goes by so fast. First day I had a few mimosas with breakfast, had some beers and a few pool drinks midday and right before dinner time at the Casino I was cut off.

You also can't get more than 15 drinks/day if you are in the casino all day..which is kinda bs imo.

This is correct.

The "unlimited" isn't unlimited and that's the only reason I brought alcohol. If i'm going to be stuck on a floating walmart I want to at least be able to drink. OP, I don't think you will get caught. I had a group of 8 guys all do it and no one got caught.

Correct, I clarified that in another post.

I'm pretty sure NCL has a truly unlimited package as well. I think their policy is anything over a $15 per drink would not be covered and you would be responsible for paying that difference.

Also, something else to keep in mind - gratuities / beverage service charges (20% I believe) are automatically charged to your stateroom account per drink. This is a NCL policy but I imagine it's similar on other cruise lines.

RCCL charges 18% gratuities that can be withheld by speaking with guest services while onboard.

Recently, I did a 7nt Western Caribbean cruise on RC, 3 ports days, 105 drinks total. I plan on going on a 5nt cruise but probably opt out of the unlimited drink package.

Ditch the drinks and find some pot gummies. You can save hundreds of dollars, avoid hangovers and probably have more fun in general

I had gummies, pre-rolls and cartridges; I brought more than I used but I had a blast. I never woke up with a hangover; I might have had 24 hours of sleep the entire cruise.

I would not do that long of a bus ride - or an excursion that would get me back just before departure - through a company outside the cruise line.

I've done a number of excursions with outside companies and they have been great but all of them have tended to be shorter 3/4 hr excursions. Ones where i am back at the port by 1 pm with a 330 pm on board time.

The legit outside tour companies (i.e. not Jose standing near the taxi drivers) are all 100 percent dependent on their reputation. They know if they get a tour back too late, it will destroy their company.

Understood. Just sharing my experience.

Most of the ruin excursions are a long bus ride though.
