Hope he got off to a good start, but epic excursions like this always seem to start badly and them smooth out as you go.

We are all rooting for you DoUrden!

It took my fat out of shape butt a few hours, but I made it to the top (twice). It was not easy for me. I truly felt out of shape doing it.

I am always amazed at the folks who attempt the trek to the top. We always hammock and grab a bite with the kids at where the parking lot approach trail meets the AT. There is a great overlook and the kids can play.

Half the people think they made it to the top, but are still two+ miles of steep ascent to the summit. Not wearing the right shoes or clothes, small kids with no practice hiking, etc... Most of them are out of breath by that point as well

I don't myself one day we can hike up for a third time and try and stay all night in that little cabin or outside of it. I would imagine it would be the stopping point for a few passerbys for the night.

The shelter is mice city. Got caught in a late night thunderstorm up there with 3 buddies and a handle of 100 proof SoCo back in high school.

Don’t be us, bring a tent or hammock and enjoy all the campsites around the rock outcroppings further down trail.

I’d love to see your gear list. The biggest mistake I see people make is taking way more than what’s necessary.

Post here when you’ve reached the NOC and I’ll buy you beers/food from The River’s End if you take a zero day there like most people do

Yup it’s supposed to be 29 at my house. It’s usually about 10 colder up there. Hopefully enjoying a zero in hiawasse. Top of ga hostel is closed for good though. Would have a been a perfect spot for a few nights

Not sure how fast he’s moving.

I believe so. Did the approach. So 84-86 miles in Georgia I believe. I don’t usually do the approach but it’s 5-7 miles as I recall. Just shy of 79 otherwise In GA. Doubt he has his hiker legs yet. Maybe 10 a day. Some of the terrain can be rough to start. Especially with the rain we had on Sunday come through.
