My hike was not successful, but for personal reasons not physical. I hiked soaked all day, I froze at night, but in the end I didn't continue.

It's not your "weekend hike", hike up hill for a mile and then a treacherous half mile down hill, on a wet slick trail, then 100 yards later do it all again, over and over. Sorry to disappoint, but none of you are more disappointed than I am, but I made the attempt and am really glad I did.

I’m glad you went. The AT trail was the idea of someone from the Department of Labor. The idea was that it would be a place for people to go and spend a week or so to “reboot”. The idea wasn’t to hike the entire length. I’m a through hiker and routinely tell people you don’t have to hike the full trail to get the benefits of it. It’s not for everyone. It’s also not going anywhere, so if you ever do decide you want to do it, it will still be there.

If you don't mind I would like to get an idea about how many people were on the trail. Did you register at the lodge? Remember what number you were? Average number of people at shelters each night?

It’s tougher than people think. Glad you got to experience a few days. Doesn’t mean you got to quit hiking though. I’m not a thru hiker but spend a few weeks a year hiking somewhere.

Hell take a break get some rest and get back out there. Or go see a different part of the trail.

I'm glad to see you are okay. How many nights did you spend on the trail?

Glad to hear from you. We aren't disappointed in the slightest. Hiking AT isn't easy no matter the shape of someone or the conditions outside. We are happy you are ok.

Absolutely no reason to be ashamed at all. I live in the area and know how unlucky you were to get hammered by that storm and cold right at the start. The AT is no joke and I’ve seen it chew up even the most experienced of hikers. Glad you’re ok.

Where did you make it to and would you attempt it again?

You might not have made it to Maine but it wasn’t unsuccessful. I’m sure there were times you were tempted to quit but you pushed on. Each of those was a victory. Meanwhile, I sat on my arse on the couch dreaming of having the guts to try it at all.

Did you hike alone? Most of the people who leave the trail that I see on videos are trying solo.

Don’t give up - build on the experience you gained and move ahead.

You are more of an inspiration than you can imagine. I live a couple of hours from it, have hiked it a little and now want to hike more of it.

I was on the trail for four days and in elevation Change I hiked up and down the great pyramid at least 5 times. I got off before blood mountain so 25 miles. Bear canister is required to camp from blood mountain to Neels Gap.

It was busy, 3rd night we had 20+ at Gooch mountain shelter, I saw two blown knees, one finger sliced the bone, and on lost crown from an energy bar....heh.

The approach trail stairs were closed, the storm the day before washed them out.

I have a few videos I shot that I didn't upload to YouTube, I will upload them if you all want.

If you don't do the approach trail you have to hike 1 mile up Springer to start your hike. Elevations I hiked ranged from 2k/ft to 3750k/ft.

I hiked alone, but everyone you meet is a friend, at Gooches you can see people coming in, we all cheered them on and greeted them when they got there. I missed trail magic by 30 minutes, she set up just after I passed through, and she had beer!

Privy closed means open for business....

How did your gear hold up? Would you have changed anything about your gear selection?

four days is longer than I’ve spent on any one hike, three days and two nights is about all I call fun.

good job getting on the trail and making it that far.
especially in those conditions

What was your backpacking experience before this?

Just curious.

The Gossamer Gear Mariposa was great, it carried the weight with out any back or shoulder issues. The Two Tent works well but the stakes are kinda light so in loose soil you might need to put rocks on the stakes. It's a two person trekking pole tent and has a pretty big footprint when staked out, but it only weights two pounds and has two entrances and vestibules.

There really isn't anything I would change.

I did 8 days in Colorado hiking and camping back in July, there isn't much in the way of scenic hiking where I live. Physically is was very challenging to be hiking up and down from 2k to 3k constantly, but I took breaks when I needed too, as I said it wasn't the physical part.

You were willing to invest a lot of time, energy and money on this one trail, so why not devote some of it to other hikes this summer instead? There are probably 100 hikes I would do before the AT. Ain't no shortage of beautiful nature to explore on this planet.

Oh I am not done hiking, the AT was just better than me, there was an 82 year old that started with me, he never caught up, but he might be the tortoise.

I met a 24 year old chick on the CDT today. This was in the Gila so she is around day 14 mile 230.

No shelters, no trail family, no training wheels. Also no rain, sleet, or major climbs, yet.

I was impressed. And jealous.

My first reaction to hearing DoUrden bailed was that he was a big ol pussy. After putting in 18 miles today with soaking wet feet for 6 hours due to river crossings I feel his pain.

Dreaming about long hikes from the couch is easy. Actually putting in long days in shite conditions is a whole different ballgame. Same with sleeping in a tent for 2-3 nights vs 100 straight nights.

Props to DoUrden for at least taking a swing. More than I have done after fantasizing about a thru hike for 5 years.
