My wife has always wanted to go to the San Diego zoo and I’m thinking of taking her there this year. For those that have been, what are some things that I need to look in to for her to get the full experience? What else do y’all recommend doing in San Diego while we are there or in the surrounding area? We plan to fly in on a fri/sat and fly out the next sat, some time in July. All help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Also, what hotels and restaurants do y’all recommend?

Went last year . Get on the double decker bus that goes around park . It will show the layout . Plan on spending a whole day at zoo . Aircraft carrier is awesome . Coronado island was interesting . We ended every day at Bolt brewery . They love people from Louisiana and always gave us happy hour prices . Weather was awesome and great Mexican and Italian food . You will enjoy .

Head to Del Mar one day. Nice town to walk around and grab some food.

Go to Torrey Pines. There are great trails there to walk.

I agree with everything Tiger 85 said except we are not beef drinkers so we went to bars instead of breweries.

id also check out the Safari Park. I actually liked it better than the zoo. My daughter loved walking up close to the seals in La Jolla. Sea World was pretty cool, too

Padres Game. Petco Park has been on my list for a while. Even chicks can enjoy a baseball game. That place looks nice

San Diego is one of my favorite places; lots to do there.
Balboa Park
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
Gaslamp District; lot of restaurants. It's near Petco Park.
There are several historic missions that I enjoyed seeing.
Cabrillo National Monument near Point Loma
If you are a fan of Dinners, Drive-Ins and Dives he went to a number of places there.

some time in July

There are big conventions in July so you might want to plan around those; Comic Con is July 21-July 24 and ESRI has a GIS conference July 11 - 15th. Might be hard to get a hotel room near the Convention Center on those dates. The CC is near Gaslamp and the ball park.

Depending on where you are staying the train can be an easy way to get around.

Bring a mask. Not for covid but because those damn seals STINK! But still cool and definitely worth checking out.

We stay on Coronado. Ferry over to downtown. Padres. Drink a Sculpin. Head to La Jolla and watch a sunset. Just chill and take in San Diego. Best city in the US, IMO.

Great views of the area from there and there are some cool tide pools on the ocean.

Also, north of LaJolla is the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. It was worth the trip and you are not far from the paraglider park. There's just a lot to do in the area and the weather and fauna is off the charts.

One of our favorites cities.

The Zoo is amazing.

They have a Safari Park out in North County that she’d probably enjoy as well.

I like Coronado Island.

Point Loma Seafood was a place I enjoyed when I lived there.

Point Loma lighthouse has great views of the city.

Balboa Park has a bunch of Museums including cars and sports. It’s neat to walk around.

Midway aircraft carrier is worth it for the audio tour.

Agree with all listed above.

Would add: Do lunch at the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island; cool, old hotel with many wall photos of historical figures on the wall (first floor). Nice place to have a drink. Also, dinner on the roof at George’s in La Jolla.

This is my trip review from a few years ago. The Zoo is great. You could spend a whole day there easily.

Enjoy your trip!
