Looking for any info regarding the great state of Utah. Didn’t know exactly where to post this but figured it’d be ok here.

Looking to relocate. Finally have the wife convinced that Packing up and heading west may be what’s in our and our kids best interest. She’s a teacher, all the certs for k-5, and I’m a lawyer (yes....insert boos here) with about 20 years exp. I’m not opposed to doing clerical stuff if it pays the bills, so no ego here.

Just asking what are some good locations for a family looking to head that way. Total newb so just asking for cities that are safe, run relatively well, and with good fishing spots close lol.

We were born and raised in Louisiana but just feel like the time has come to pack up and go.

I would second St. George but have you fully vetted what life there is like to live there as a non-Mormon if you are not one?

Salt Lake is the only city I’d consider, assuming your family is not Mormon. Ogden, St. George, etc are nice to visit but I don’t think would be good at all for a family or children. If you’re down to convert to LDS, that’s a different story.

SLC is less than 50% Mormon. The rest of the state is 95%. I assume you are open minded to this if moving to Utah but let me assure you that the clear majority of Utahns outside of Salt Lake will not appreciate your presence as a non-Mormon from Louisiana. Outside of obvious direct biases against you, the social life for you and your kids outside of Salt Lake will predominantly start and end with LDS activities

Salt Lake is an amazing city and in the middle of the most scenic area in Utah. It doesn’t really have the same problems as a city like NOLA, for example. It also has large non-LDS communities so you and your kids won’t feel completely shut out. The people I know from there love it, are smart and well adjusted, healthy from the wide variety of exercise available, and generally don’t leave.

All of this is spot on. I will say that SLC was surprisingly liberal compared to the rest of Utah and certainly more so than what I was accustomed to being from Alabama.

I'd move to SLC tomorrow if I could. I may still end up getting some property there in the future. I love being there in the summer. Actually be there at the end of this month. Job opportunities abound. The cleanest city I've ever been to. People are nice, food is better than you think. University of Utah has a small, but rabid fanbase for football. Endless outdoor activities.

Man I have not. So I honestly have no clue how inclusive or exclusive they’d be towards some Louisiana Catholics lol. Obviously I’d be coming as well meaning immigrant on their turf. No desire to change or mock their way of life.

Thank you for all of that. We will have some time in the later half of the summer to spend some time there. I think SLC will be a good starting point with st George being on the docket as well. We have family in Durango so can fly to SLC then drive south eventually working back to Durango.

And it can't be understated how close SLC is to some amazing skiing. Park City/Deer Valley are 25-30 miles from the eastern edge of the city. Alta and Solitude are not quite 15 miles.

I have a good friend from college who lived in Sun Valley for a while, but is now in SLC and loves it. He is definitely not Mormon.

Very nice. I’m big into fly fishing and that area seems to have some nice spots as well. As far as skiing goes, the first time I strap on a pair of skis, will be the first time I ski lol. Bunny slopes for sure.

I've been in Utah (SLC) since the mid/late-90's:

- SLC if living in a metro area is your thing. Neither you or your wife will have issues with employment (really anywhere in Utah). If you need neighborhoods LMK.

- Park City is great too and somewhat of a resort town. I've chosen not to ever live there because it can get quite congested during ski season and during Sundance. Also cost per sq. ft. for real estate will be double or even triple compared to the valley.

- Historically Ogden has been not that great but that's changing quickly as real estate becomes more expensive in SLC. The revitalization and gentrification is migrating north to Ogden.

- Logan is great but definitely small (50-ish K). Utah State University is there so it can be considered a conservative college town, and the lifstyle is certainly slower.

- St George is the fastest growing city in Utah and is resort-ish because of all the golf and national parks close by. Its also 80 miles from Vegas. Many Utahn's have vacation homes in St. George. During the next crash I'll buy a spot down there.

- Provo/Lehi/American Fork are good but the conservatism and religion will be ratcheted up on that side of the "point of the mountain". Many tech companies over there.

I'm a non-practicing Catholic and all prior jokes on this board aside, I think the LDS "thing" is the most overblown element of Utah. However, I like that Utah has this perception because it keeps many people from moving here. Now I wouldn't choose to live in a place like Provo. You'll have assholes that are a bit puritanical about being Mormon but I've found those people to be very few and far between. The typical Mormon is hard working, family focused, communitity oriented, and speaks a second language. Great neighbors from my own personal experience.

Judge Memorial (Catholic) School is here if that's important to you, but the public school system here is great. There's also a Jewish private school, and I'm a member of the Jewish Community Center because their pools and workout facilities are outstanding. I would also suggest learning to fly fish.

State a city governments are well run, business friendly and fiscally conservative. Graft is not prevalent.

If you need more specifics LMK. There are certianly other areas as well that I would consider living (Morgan County comes to mind).

So much this! I even know someone who was transferred from Shreveport to Phoenix, AZ who had this issue. Evidently, there are a few suburbs in Phoenix where most of the half a million Mormons live. It was hard for their kids in school and with social activities since they all revolved around the LDS church. They ended up moving back to Shreveport.

It's not at all like that when you have kids who don't have social activities because all their school friends activities revolve around their church...a church you don't really want your kids going to. My friend's kids were not treated kindly by the Mormons at their school in Phoenix.

I applaud your move but as an attorney in La. with the same level of experience as you, how do you plan to make the career change? I'm asking for my own curiosity. I'd love to move(kids are in the teens now, so not till they finish high school), but my dilemma is I don't want to start over in the legal profession.

Moved back to Shreveport

This is exactly the type of bullshite, hyperbolic opinion I'm talking about. This is second-hand from a friend that lived in Phoenix. Next you'll tell me Boise sucks too (it doesn't). Maybe your friend's kids weren't treated kindly because they're kids, and they were new? No, it couldn't be. Maybe your friends and their kids were the assholes? Also have you ever attended an LDS Sacrament Meeting? Its church, lady. They're not castrating goats and drinking blood. But by all means, please continue to share your opinion with anyone that will listen. I certainly do appreciate it.

In all seriousness, I've known a lot of mormons and they're good people. It's not that they won't be polite, it's just that, as a non-mormon, you can't come in. It's a little hard to imagine from Louisiana where most people are overly welcoming of anyone who show's good intentions. A wedding is a good example. That mormon wedding you went to wasn't actually the wedding. It was the show ceremony for their non-believing friends. You're not allowed in to the real thing. Even if you're the grooms childhood best friend and the groom just converted last week.

Young and single or old/retired I'd move anywhere in that state. With kids I'd only go SLC and I'd be at least a little hesitant there. It's also a consideration on the business side. You'll be asked "who's your bishop?" "what ward" etc. constantly.

Serious question - is this even allowed? I ask because I asked to attend with some LDS friends when I was in highschool and was told I was not allowed to attend.
