He shouldn’t have apologized. It was a casual reference to a game he played as a kid long before today’s hyper-sensitive era of word policing. Nothing malicious, no targeted slur. There are bigger things to worry about than manufactured outrage over playground slang from two decades ago.

Growing up, it was always either "smear the queer" or "Kill the man with the ball", but definitely more commonly referenced as "smear the queer". Never once heard it as "kill the carrier," but shouldn't that trigger snowflakes too, what with all the referenced violence?
