How in the world can a program like Florida, hire a coach that has never been a head coach. Mack Brown and Texas is cleaning house.

If he was good enough to be "Head Coach In-Waiting" at UT, arguably the best job in college football, then what makes him such a poor hire?

Because he would have been waiting about 20 years. They just did that to keep him from getting away (or so they thought!)

It's not a terrible hire. Knows the SEC, will have a ton of talent to make up for his mistakes/inexperience.

I was hoping for Mullen. The trip to Starkvegas next year will be tough.

hire isn't all that far-fetched

Urban was begged back last yr by Foley. This yr was last yr and gave them time to plan. Muschamp gives them a hot prospect, young coach, players coach, recruiter, etc. Hell, if Miles went to Michigan this would be the first guy LSU called

Muschamp also is accessible right away during prime recuriting season because TX didnt make a bowl, and he's rival UGA's alum which is an extra dig

I dont mind the hire at all

What an awful hire, if true.
This is one of the best things to happen for LSU football in a long time. Muschamp will eventually make Florida fans nostalgic for Zook.

You have anything to substantiate this?

I have to agree with previous posters - this is a gamble on Foley's part. I don't buy the "Muschamp was our first offer" statement. Mullen was such a perfect fit that this should have been done as soon as the ink was dry on the contract.

Foley couldn't close on Mullen for whatever reason and that may eventually cost him his job. As Muschamp has no HC experience - which is important at any level and flat critical at a program like UF - the choice of an OC may make or break this whole move.

As a Gator fan, I'm a little unsure of the hire but I'm not sure it's as bad as others have made it out to be.

He was going to be the next coach at Texas. Would probably have been Georgia's first phone call if they fired Richt. And likely would have been among the top candidates at LSU if the job opened up.

So I don't get the whole "UF shouldn't have to settle for a coordinator" mentality when he would be a very serious candidate at 3 other top coaching positions.

I never liked Mullen, don't want that asshat Petrino coaching my team, and Stoops and Petersen likely were never coming. So I'm actually not sure who else would have been a good enough candidate for the job.

My thought - Urban has set Muschamp up to win fast. The defensive talent he has to work with is insane. I think if he can put together a good offensive staff, he can win a lot of games. His true test will come when he has to win with his own recruits.

True...and in the 10 to 15 years before that actually happened, WM may have been ready to be a head coach.

Bull frickin' shite!

LSU will never hire a DC or OC again for head coach! We did that with Archer and it cost us. Never again....

You need to stick to points about which you have some knowledge and not make up shite just to cover up your embarrassment that Florida could not attract a successful head coach to replace Meyer.

So was the talent at Texas.
I like Muschamp, but why did the Texas D suck so bad?

We might but probably wouldn't. Muschamp was one of the few (if only) assistant that LSU would have looked at IF the HC position had become available.

I don't think he was a bad hire, but when considering the potential clients people spoke about (Mullen, Stoops, Petrino, etc.), Muschamp scares me the least.
