Damn. He must have been dealing with some heavy shite if that’s how it happened.

There was some George Floyd-related BS going on at USM at the time. There was Covid-related BS, too.

People tend to forget it, but that one USM game he coached in 2020 was the very first FBS football game played after the advent of Muh Covid, and there was a groundswell of laziness coming from the team under the guise of being too afraid of Covid / too verklempt about St. George to play.

Somehow Hopson put together a team willing to play some semblance of football, but after the predictable arse-beating by Real Non-Lazy Football Players, Hop decided he'd had enough.

That's my interpretation, at least. That 2020 team sucked. They literally went through (I think) four coaches. I wouldn't have stepped foot in that locker room without a bullwhip and some bloodhounds.

Imagine being on campus during that time. It was usually empty by the end of 1st quarter, we were bad and vibes around the team and town were worse

I think internal strife in the AD and money were the real factors. Jay did a solid job at USM and never got a raise because USM was broke. Moreover, there wasn't really a good plan in place to resolve the issue and they're still dealing with it today.

I think it's just a matter of time before USM drops to FCS unless they start getting some real cash infusion.

I’ll agree with you there. With Hop, we lost a lot of games we should’ve won. His teams had a lot of talent, granted I’d take him back over Hall anyday of the week.

What is up with Charles Huff being interested? That seems like a lateral move at best for him.

Allegedly, he doesn't get along with the administration at Marshall and they haven't given him a new contract.

Huff openly criticized the Marshall fanbase for their starting QB transferring last year. Marshall has thus far chosen not to extend him. It's a marriage in bad shape despite Huff doing very well on the field.

It'd be a great hire for USM and as of now, that's what I think is going to happen. We will know shortly cause Marshall will have to give him an extension if he's going to coach in the postseason.

Yep, Louisiana Laf is recruiting Miss and taking players right out of Petal and all over Miss. They have quite a few players from Miss who have played well for them. South Al with the new stadium and Major is doing well recruiting Miss also.

USM should hire Charlie Weis Jr.

He’s an offensive savant and will bring them to the playoff

Hopson never did anything to deserve a raise.

USM is far from needing to go FCS. It's looking like they're going to poach Huff from Marshall at around $1.4 million per year. USM may not spend a bunch of cash, but they have actual fans in significant numbers, and I suspect there are 20-30 FBS programs that you can't really say that about. Beyond that, how does dropping to FCS even help? Seems like it would make things worse, if money is really the problem. (I don't think it is. I think it's an excuse and the money is there if the AD can just get off his arse.)

Huff is taking Marshall to the Sun Belt championship. Not sure exactly why anyone could assume he’s leaving a successful program for 1-11 usm

Probably because if the 1.4 million dollar salary is correct that would be more than the 755k salary he makes now.

Marshall chose not to extend Huff and his contract is expired. Just a bad marriage that USM will benefit from.

Unless I am missing something Marshall has had 2 coaches (Holliday 11 seasons with 3 losing season 2 of which were 5-7 and Huff 4 seasons with 1 losing season 6-7 after the bowl loss) where they have decided to not extend the coach after their contract expired. Is this on the A.D. thinking that the coaches need to go 12-0 every year?

I think it's two different situations. I remember when Holliday was fired, their message board was saying that one conference title in 10 years wasn't a good enough ROI with the talent they had.

Looking over there today, it seems like most Marshall fans like Huff. The main issue appears to be similar to Sonny Dykes at Cal, where Huff's family aren't happy in Huntington, so he has been looking for a way out for a while, and his bosses are simply fed up with it.

Hattiesburg is a quintessential southern Small town with a college in the middle. It has about 50-60K with all of the stores restaurants etc that a family needs and is only an hour from Biloxi, hour and a half from NOLA and 2.5 from gulf shores.
