Lane was the coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2007-2008. He did poorly in the NFL. He is not going back. He knows that he is better in college, just like Saban.

Pete Carroll (who Lane coached under before going to Oakland) failed in the NFL, then had success in college and went back to the NFL and did well at Seattle. Kiffin's dad was a long time high profile NFL assistant. Wouldn't shock me at all if he wanted to give the NFL another shot. He was essentially a kid when he got the Oakland job.

Good perspective. And makes the point that a lot of people seem to miss. None of us really know how these coaches really feel outside of coach speak, which is to be taken with a grain of salt.

A lot of people speak in absolutes and are often wrong. Calling someone dumb or stupid because they ask a “what if” or “why not” question doesn’t add much to the discussion.

The NFL makes sense. Lane would fit there. He also may want to give it a shot

Are you 12? He’s already tried this once and it didn’t work out well at all.

I don't think Saban is as important to Kiffin as Jimmy Sexton is.
Sexton has placed Kiffin in most (if not all) of his having been hired for two or three decades.
Where does Sexton think Kiffin can get the most money and, thus, where Sexton can get the most money? Sexton may well be moving other chess pieces around and this year is truly a game of 3-d chess.

Yes, I forgot about that. Lane has bounced around as much as his dad. He has been all over. I will say the 2007 version of Lane isn’t the same one as today. Making the comparison to Saban coming back into college football doesn’t apply anymore. College football is basically professional football now. No real difference anymore. I’d bet he thinks he could win at the pro level and he probably could now.

I did forget. I’d argue that Lane is a much more mature coach now. I think he could be successful in the NFL now. It would not shock me at all. There is really nothing more he can do at Ole Miss. The program is maxed out and he likely knows that. It’s time to move on.

Kiffin could give zero shits about who is paying the most. HE IS FOCUSED ON FAMILY

He is dominating with a D2 QB and an ILB from Grambling. I think he’s just started to get the ball rolling in this NIL era

The average NFL head coach earns 6-7millions. Sean Payton makes 18millions. And I don't think NFL will pay lane over 10 millions.

Why hasn’t Lane signed the extension?

Because he’s about to become the highest paid coach in the country. After all the inquiries his agent fields, they’ll go back to Ole Miss and they’ll pay him whatever he wants. He’ll end up at about 15 million/yr give or take a bit.

Something to consider is that Saban is a mentor to LK.

Saban fired Lane one week before the ‘ship?
I’m not sure they are friends

I thought it was reported recently that Saban talked to Kiffin about not leaving OM if he’s getting what he needs from the athletic department and boosters. But apparently it was just a comment he made on Gameday regarding the situation. So maybe there’s not a close relationship. I’d forgotten Saban canned him.

He would have more family time as an NFL coach. If he's coaching the Dolphins he can dock his boat at his water front mansion

He would have the same resources at Florida, a better governor and Gainesville is a helluva lot nicer than BR.

LSU doesn’t play Florida in 2026.
