I was watching Superman Returns with my 15 Y/O son and IMO he was a much better "Superman" than Henry Cavill..

Granted, Cavill's version was darker but I don't think he can play the all-America "Boy Scout" as well as Roth did.

Roth plays the Christopher Reeve Superman almost identically right down to the look and voice.

Roth

Cavill

I'm sure this has been discussed so SIAP

I thought Routh was a great fit.

But I also feel like Cavill would be an awesome Bond. But will likely never get the nod now that he’s committed to other things.

He's a much better Geralt than he was a Clark.

He played a Bond like character in a Bond like film that is better than %80 of Bond movies...

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

It's a shame that this didn't get a sequel, it was a really fun movie.

Comic book-wise, I always thought Rock Hudson (buffed-up) would’ve made the perfect live-action Superman/Clark Kent:

He might’ve made a good Bruce Wayne, too.

I though Cavill was excellent as Superman, just got a raw deal with the scripts he had to work with. I’d love to see him return to battle Black Adam/Shazam, and get a big screen Brainiac adaptation in a solo film.

Well, considering that Superman Returns was a continuation of the Donner movies, this is exactly what Singer was looking for. I agree with you that Routh nailed the role in that sense. Also, having grown up with that Superman, I liked his portrayal in what really was a not very good movie...and that's being generous.

Cavill was great doing what he was asked to do, and I really think that he is an exceptional actor. He was great in Mission Impossible and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

It just depends on what you are looking for in the Superman character, but I think both of them are great choices.

My Silver Age pick would've been Clint Walker:

No padding needed (if anything the costume would only take away from his superhero physique.) He could do an "Aww shucks" midwestern drawl that would've been perfect for Clark from Smallville.

You've convinced me. I'm changing my pick. All he needs is some spandex & a cape.

Though the secret identity, masked only by some glasses, might be even harder to pull off. But that dude was a 6'-6" mountain born to play Superman.

No one will ever look better as Superman than Cavill. Ever imo.

And although he never got the opportunity (minus a very brief period at the end of a horrible JL movie), he also would have nailed Superman’s personality. Writing and tone prohibited him from being what he could be.

Routh was fricking terrible.

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely tackled it by making Clark a big, hulking dufus. An intelligent clod instead of an intelligent weakling.

Cahill was the best ever IMHO. That dude just has it. Routh was very good but not doing much these days. He has been in a few Hallmark movies though.

Routh was a better Clark Kent because he was playing Christopher Reeves playing Clark Kent.

Cavill not only has the better look and build, he's a lifelong comic book fan so he knows the character. Cavill by a mile.

Routh was the better Donner Superman/Clark Kent.

Cavill was the better Superman.
