Recently booked/PAID for an upcoming flight to Costa Rica...a few weeks later THEY CANCEL the flight and say there are NO alternate flights available AND we will receive a spirit 'credit'...WTH ?? Now, they are again listing flights to Costa Rica.....WHO regulates US airlines or are they able to 'operate' with impunity ??

The one time I flew Spirit, it was to Puerto Rico.
Flight was leaving pretty late at night and connecting in Fort Lauderdale.
While we are on the tarmac of MSY, one of our friends got an email saying that the 2nd flight was cancelled. We ask the stewardess and she says nothing to worry about, the flight is still going.
We get there...the flight is cancelled. Along with pretty much every flight from Fort Lauderdale all day, no explanation.
There is literally a 4 hour line to get the front and talk to someone, and a busy signal on the phone number. Fights breaking out, mayhem.
We were finally able to get through, cancel our flight, get part of our money back, and get a flight the next morning on American out of Miami. Had to take a cab to Miami, spend the night in the airport (and lose a night in our hotel), fly in the next morning to a completely different city, change our rental car location and drive over etc.

That sounds a lot like what happened to a friend of mine for one of Bama’s national championship games. He was supposed to arrive the night before the game, but didn’t get to the city l(I think it was when it was in Phoenix) until a couple of hours before kickoff.

Again...just WHO regulates US carriers and HOW could they allow such 3rd world aviation antics ??

fares and routes have been deregulated for decades. Welcome to the 1980s

The U.S. Department of Transportation.
You can look at their policies on Aviation Consumer Protection here.
The bad news is that there isn't much protection for delays and cancellations.
And yes, in many ways, the U.S. transportation infrastructure, including our air transportation, leaves a lot to be desired and can be described as third-world like in many ways.

The entire industry is like that and some of them just push it further than others.
It's like going to a restaurant, ordering the cannelloni then immediately paying. Right before your food comes out, they tell you they don't have cannelloni but will bring you shrimp parm and if you don't like shrimp parm, tough. They'll give you a gif certificate BUT only allow you to use the GC and they'll dictate when you have to use it by.

One of the many reasons to pay a little extra and fly on one of the big carriers.

Saw a video recently of a girl who had her spirit flight get moved up an hour and she couldn’t get a refund because they said they emailed her and she still missed it.
The kicker? She got the email notification 2 minutes after the flight was scheduled to depart.
Stop flyin Spirit

Spirit has an option to pay for the ability to change / modify tickets.
The reality is... you went cheap and part of going cheap is accepting that you aren't getting a refund... you can get a credit, best they can do.

I've flown Spirit several times and I've never had an issue

You have a point with the 'going cheap' aspect...I'll admit to that ! However, the fact that spirit is even allowed to 'operate' as a carrier in the U. S. is most concerning. To top it all off...spirit says I have to use said 'credit' w/in 90 days ! Seems it would be much simpler for me to inquire as to WHERE they will allow me to fly and WHEN...LOL
Lesson learned...stay AWAY from 3rd world carriers such as spirit, saving 30% on an often non-existent flight, is NOT worth all the hassel !

What's concerning about it? Do they have a poor safety record? Did they violate your contract of carriage? Did they run afoul of any FAA rules or regulations?
Face it--you went cheap and it bit you in the arse. Learn a lesson from it and quit whining. Everyone knows Spirit is a trash airline.

This thread pops up every few months, and I'm baffled every time. You are signing up with a limited route airline that explicitly states it will save money, but with stipulations. Part of that stipulation is the possibility of cancelation or delay without significant recourse.
I don't fly spirit because I don't want to deal with these hassles. They are a budget option with real short falls. That doesn't mean we should increase government oversight because they canceled your flight. You bet on red. Black hit. Your response is and should be to never fly with them again.
To somehow use this situation to demand more government intervention is ludicrous to me.

Pay with credit card and fight the charges

I’ve flown spirit three or four times with zero issues. Went to Vegas from msy last week and flights were perfectly on time and got a window seat each way with no one in the middle seat. I guess I’ve just been lucky.

Don't. Fly. Those. Airlines.
Spirit
Breeze
etc...
It is all a con that happens to own a few planes.

Flew to Cancun and back over the past weekend (out on Friday back on Monday)....no issues. However the flight back was at full capacity. I talked to many passengers during boarding and found out that Spirit had cancelled their return flight (last minute) that had been scheduled for Saturday with the only option being a seat on the Monday flight. I guess I have dodged a bullet in my experiences. Not sure that I'm willing to keep tempting fate.
Flights were on-time both ways, cheap, booked 7 days prior as a last minute getaway and traveled with no luggage...just backpacks. This allowed us to avoid ticketing lines to drop off luggage and we used kiosks for boarding and passport scanning.

I don’t understand why people fly Spirit to begin with.
People hate on the big box carriers but if you gain any sort of status with them situations like this are way more avoidable.

you don’t even need status.
just fly basic economy with a major airline. It’s no worse a flight than the discounters and you will have options when something happens
instead of getting stranded over 50 bucks in savings
