Never make a mother mad, US Soccer Edition

Danielle Reyna, wife of former United States men's national team captain Claudio and mother of current international Gio, says she told U.S. Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart about USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter's past domestic violence incident because she was frustrated by comments made about her son following the team's elimination from the 2022 World Cup.
quote:
The information was shared following comments Berhalter made at the HOW Institute for Society's Summit on Moral Leadership in New York detailing how "a player" was nearly sent home from the World Cup for not meeting expectations on and off the field.
quote:
Berhalter did not identify anyone by name, however, it was a clear reference to Reyna and confirmed by the player in an Instagram post the next day.
Danielle Reyna said in a statement on Wednesday: "I thought it was especially unfair that Gio, who had apologized for acting immaturely about his playing time, was still being dragged through the mud when Gregg had asked for and received forgiveness for doing something so much worse at the same age."
Claudio Reyna also sent multiple messages to USMNT general manager Brian McBride and Stewart during the World Cup, in which he said he shared his frustration about Gio's World Cup experience.
quote:
Multiple sources told ESPN he threatened to share allegations about Berhalter's past, but Reyna has denied those allegations.
"While in Qatar, I shared my frustrations about my son's World Cup experience with a number of close friends, Earnie and Brian McBride among them. However, at no time did I ever threaten anyone, nor would I ever do so," he said in Wednesday's statement.
The messages began from Claudio after his son, Gio Reyna, was informed he would have a limited role at the tournament.
U.S. Soccer did not receive any details about the claims against Berhalter until Dec. 11, when an executive was informed in a call with Claudio and Danielle Reyna that Berhalter, 49, had a past domestic violence incident, sources told ESPN.
quote:
On Tuesday, Berhalter, whose contract as U.S. coach expired Dec. 31, revealed details of the incident with his wife in a lengthy statement posted to Twitter.
"During the World Cup an individual contacted U.S. Soccer, saying that they had information about me that would 'take me down' - an apparent effort to leverage something very personal from long ago to bring about the end of my relationship with U.S. Soccer," Berhalter said.
"In the fall of 1991, I met my soulmate. I had just turned 18 and was a freshman in college when I met Rosalind," Berhalter said. "One night, while out drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I had a heated argument that continued outside. It became physical and I kicked her in the legs."

In response to Berhalter's characterization of the events, Danielle Reyna said: "Without going into detail, the statements from yesterday significantly minimize the abuse on the night in question. Rosalind Berhalter was my roommate, teammate and best friend, and I supported her through the trauma that followed.
"It took a long time for me to forgive and accept Gregg afterward, but I worked hard to give him grace, and ultimately made both of them and their kids a huge part of my family's life. I would have wanted and expected him to give the same grace to Gio. This is why the current situation is so very hurtful and hard."

To dig something like that up from 25 years ago is so petty
The two have been married now for 25 years with a family
They obviously worked it out

Well, now it's clear where he learned how to act like a bitch.

The amount of people defending a fairly unpopular coach is telling. This was a POS move by Mrs. Reyna

US Soccer is such an embarrassment. every story you hear about is some scandalous off the field issue/politics, and hardly ever anything about the actual sport.

What a miserable bitch. She deserves nothing but the worst for doing this.

These four have been friends for over 30 years. Both husband and wives were teammates respectively. Ruined over travel ball shite.

This situation means we're closer to winning a World Cup than ever as a country. This is a proper soccer scandal similar to scandals in many of the other top soccer countries in the world.

The admins here are so fricking insecure sometimes about Soccer being on the More Sports Board. Honestly it's weird.
This is the type of drama that board thrives on but I guess more pointless topics are important there. Like it isn't killing anyone. No one is talking tactics. Yet the admins move it here where it is already being discussed in various threads.
Admins on this site are fricking weirdos about soccer.

It wasn’t “during a currently contested World Cup”. It was after the US was eliminated and after Gregg talked shite about Gio.
But I understand why you thought so, given how Gregg worded his statement to convey exactly that misconception.

Hopefully Gio's mom didn't ruin his career with the USMNT. I'd have a hard time facing the team / coach as a grown man who's Mom is bad mouthing the coach / trying to get him fired.
