As an architecture geek, I know the discourse on design/architecture can come off as pretentious and snobby. However, I hope I can sharpen your architectural eye with easy to use terms. The most simple way is a system I read about in the book “Golf Course Architecture for Normal People” by Geoff Shackleford. The system is called the RED system:
- R: Can you Remember every hole
- E: Would you want to play it Every day
- D: Is it a good place to walk your Dog
In other words , the R (remember every hole) is a way to see if no two holes are alike, and there is great variety. The E (play it every day) means that the holes don’t get boring, and there are multiple ways to play every hole. The D (walk your dog) means essentially is the course easily walkable. The walk your dog part relates to the routing, meaning is the course laid on the land in a natural way, with no excessive walks from tee to green (the course is not built for carts).

This is a good place to start if you know nothing about architecture and hope it helps!

Are good shots rewarded and not penalized?
Does the golfer have to make decisions?

It doesn't happen enough.

But I love when I walk into a new course and they have a chalk board with the greens stimpmeter reading and the fairway cut that day .

Like seeing a professional looking staff and the course rules posted. Especially the pace of play expected.

And yes, tee shirts have no place on a golf course.

Does every tee shot land into an upslope?

Will the green hold a thinned iron?

Are the bunkers raked properly?

Do balls roll backwards on some shots short of green?

Are the surrounds soaking wet?

I read this book a few months ago. Shackleford starts the book talking about writing something that isn't for architecture snobs, but the book came off as him being an architecture snob the entire time. I was pretty disappointed in it.

However, I read A Course Called Ireland next, and I cannot recommend that one enough. I would assume it has been read by a few on this board.

It’s a shame more golfers from Louisiana aren’t into Golf Course Architecture. There’s really a lot of amazing stuff out there on design philosophy and history that makes you think about the game in different ways. I’d recommend checking out Instagram pages like The Fried Egg, Links Gems, etc to get into it in an approachable way. From there, there is an insane amount of information in books, videos, articles etc on the topic.

As much as I love Oakbourne, and how nice it is, this happens a lot. It sucks. Several holes you can hit the fairway and still not have a shot at the green.

(left fairway on 3, 12, 16; right fairway on 1, 10)
