Ingram 27
quote:

Ingram is perhaps the most underrated player in the NBA. Maybe it’s his placid demeanor or small-market home. Maybe it’s the metronomic manner in which he goes about putting the ball in the basket (cross screen to post-up to baseline turnaround). Maybe it’s the frequent ailments that keep him out of the lineup (Ingram hadn’t played more than 62 games since his rookie year coming into this season) or that he’s appeared in only one playoff series.

But all of that criticism melts into irrelevance whenever you witness him go shot for shot against the very best. Ingram can dissect a defense and set up teammates to attack a game plan that’s typically dead set on slowing him down. Ingram has always been able to score, but he’s quietly developed into an excellent creator as well, and he leads his team in assists even as he shares the floor with CJ McCollum and Point Zion. Anyone who tunes into a Pelicans game to watch Zion dominate instead gets to observe how evolved and compelling Ingram’s offensive repertoire has become. And, somehow, he’s still only 26 years old. The best is yet to come. —Zach Kram and Michael Pina

Zion 28

quote:

Zion has become something we never could have anticipated: effective but rarely dominant, and flat to the point that he almost fades into the background. It’s a baffling sight. Williamson is still a novel force in the NBA landscape, a one-of-one talent who can push the boundaries of the comprehensible. Players of his size aren’t supposed to attack as dynamically as he does, and yet there he is, exploding off the bounce and creating all the leverage he needs with an opportune bump. Nothing can really stop Williamson from scoring. Now he just does it as a participant in a balanced offense, setting the table like he isn’t one of the most individually dominant creators in the sport.

It’s hard to know what to make of that kind of quietly constructive season. Showing up and punching a clock clearly beats the frequent injuries, vague recovery timelines, and murmurs of discontent that have marked Zion’s career to date. Yet it’s not as if the bigger, louder concerns about his game have entirely dissipated. Work ethic. Commitment. His interest in playing consistent defense. How he picks and chooses when to attack. Whether the human body can actually withstand the raw power of playing and moving the way he does. The flashes in Williamson’s game are as captivating as ever; when he’s healthy and right, everything in his game just happens so fast. But when an organization is still figuring out if it can rely on Zion to stay healthy and in shape and fully bought in, it’s hard to justify putting the future of the franchise on his shoulders. —Rob Mahoney

CJ 67 (80 to start season)

quote:

After nearly a decade in Dame’s shadow, McCollum finally got a backcourt to himself in New Orleans, but his new role has less to do with his solo potential and more to do with his 10,000-plus hours excelling around a star. McCollum is now the adult in the room and has been at his best providing structure for the young Pelicans—picking his spots, filling in the (many) injury holes, trying to lead by example.

Upon his arrival at the 2022 trade deadline, McCollum looked reinvigorated while spurring a spunky, Zion-less Pelicans team to the first round of the playoffs. But after spending 2022-23 forcing up shots amid absences up and down the roster and breathlessly trying to get Zion to buy in, McCollum has downshifted this season: He’s having the sort of impact that’s seen, not heard. The 11-year veteran is on track for his lowest usage rate since his sophomore year, as he cedes the floor more and more to Williamson and Brandon Ingram, but he’s also having the best shooting season of his career. McCollum is a connector, and while there are certainly times you’d wish he’d add more value, particularly on the defensive end, his caretaking skills will ultimately help create a bridge to the future, when the guard New Orleans recently drafted in the lottery comes of age. —Justin Verrier

Herb 75 (started unranked)

quote:

Since Jones entered the NBA, the Pelicans have always been better with him on the court. He’s a game changer who lives in passing lanes, bottles up opponents, and never gives up on a play. There are only a handful of defenders whose length and anticipation allow them to duck under screens guarding a pick-and-roll and then still recover back to the ball handler before any damage can be done.

The question for Jones is whether he can fulfill the “3” part of the 3-and-D formula. Until this season, that answer was no: Jones was a 34 percent 3-point shooter on low volume, and opposing defenses routinely sagged off him to clog the Pelicans’ paint. So what a turnaround this season has been: Jones now ranks as one of the most accurate shooters in the league, albeit on mostly open looks, and his per-game makes have doubled. Jones was already a good player, by virtue of his defense alone. But this version of him is even greater. —Zach Kram and Michael Pina

Interesting. What was it before?

Zion has pretty clearly separated from BI the past month or so as we've moved towards Point Zion.

There is no way Derrick freaking White is a top 40 player in the NBA.

The ringers initial rankings. If you click the link and then click view timeline next to the players you'll see what they were ranked beginning of the year.

I'm confused that Zion started the year ahead of BI.

Zion has clearly been the best player on the team.

And now Zion is ranked behind BI.

In terms of play since January 1st, Zion should be ranked near #20. BI would still be in the #30-35 range. Herb, CJ, and Trey should all be on the list.

Since the last update (2/14)

Zion:

22.3 pts
7.0 ast
6.3 reb
1.3 blk
.6 stl
56% FG
19.9 game score
5.5 +/-

BI:

20.5 pts
6.3 ast
5.4 reb
.6 blk
.9 stl
50% FG
16.2 Game score
4.8 +/-

Not sure how/why BI is ranked above Zion

ETA: I just don’t get some of their rankings

Interesting list, Player summaries are fairly reflective. If Pels continue to win, you'd expect a couple of those rankings to go lower.

I’m assuming maybe they were putting this updated list together 5-7 games ago, before Zion started blocking shots, rebounding and playing legitimately good defense.

I've always thought that if we could just get this team into the playoffs, Zion would get a fair whistle because the NBA wants to see him do well there..

This article kinda shits on that. His star has faded so significantly that the media has pretty much forgotten him, which isn't surprising given how many actual games he's played in front of people
