I tried watching this movie last evening. I was shocked at how bad the filmmaking was. It had no rhythm, no character development, no story structure. All it seemed to be was a conglomeration of scenes shot piecemeal and cobbled together by an amateur.

Probably the worst I’ve ever seen.

Same here.

Made it 30 minutes then turned it off.

I agree, it was really strange. The movie covers at least 20 years and nobody ages. Too much to try and fit in one movie. I was very disappointed.

JP’s performance is so uneven. Sometimes he plays it like a comedy, other times like a tragic romance, etc. It’s just weird. I thought a 4 hour cut was going to fast follow on Apple?

The battle scenes were cool but that’s about it

I couldn’t get past Phoenix in the role.. felt like he was just cosplaying Napoleon

Hated it and it was one of my most anticipated movies of last year

It feels like it wanted to just be about Josephine and Napoleon, but they had to throw in the battles to try to sell tickets.

Hopefully the longer cut is a more cohesive narrative. The theatrical release had good moments, but was kind of a Frankenstein's monster, pieced together sort of mess of a movie.

My favorite part was when some of the French people in the late 1700s/early 1800s spoke English with a British accent.

I turned it off halfway through. I think it was the austerlitz battle that made me quit. Trash movie

Saw it in the theater with my son, one of the more disappointing movies I've ever seen. Just awful based on the director and money spent to make. Waste of celluloid.

It wasn't good.

I think it also suffered from having an awesome trailer which increased expectations.

It was basically about a guy and his wife arguing all the time and a little war sprinkled in.

If you watch the film as a comedy, it is a completely different experience. Halfway through the film in the theater I realized what was going on and it changed the entire film.

Ridley even confirmed the elements in it that are comedic are supposed to be there.

1. Napoleon is perhaps my favorite historical figure.

2. In spite of #1, I didn’t like the film for a lot of reasons. For starters, they needed a younger actor for Napoleon.

3. One movie is not nearly enough time for the rise and fall of Napoleon. This should have been a Netflix series or something.

But why though?

Maybe. His comment about the cannon firing at the pyramids was asinine.

What a disappointing film.

When the movie premiered a reporter told Scott that the French critics hated it. His response was “the French hate themselves.”

There were talks of a 4+ hour director’s cut but I don’t see any hope of a Kingdom of Heaven-like redemption for this movie.

The Bondarchuk/Rod Steiger “Waterloo” makes this one look like amateur hour.

I liked it. Definitely worth a single viewing.

The biggest issue was casting.

As has been mentioned before, the actor playing Napoleon was WAY TOO OLD and the actress playing Josephine was WAYWAY WAY too young.

And they tried to fit WAY too much history into this movie. Probably should have just stuck with a 10 year period from 1805-1815.
