Wasn’t the show supposed to be set in the 50s , during the Korean War?
The characters talk, act and dress as if it’s modern day, which would have been the 1970’s. I did not watch much of this show at all, but I never felt like I was watching a show set in the 1950s.

I was just wondering. The show Happy Days made every effort to have the show look like “the 1950s”. That was a large part of the show’s appeal.

Stranger Things managed to do this really well.

Yes. My dad was in the Korean War. From his pictures of himself and his friends, none of them would've fit in with the cast of M*A*S*H. The men wouldn't have had any sideburns at all, the women wouldn't have had those free flowing hairstyles. Hawkeye and B.J. with bushy hair and a mustache wouldn't fit either.

I always found it odd that the "happy" theme song was about suicide.

Part of it stems from both the original movie and then show set up as a critique of the Vietnam War that was well underway at the time.

Yeah, luckily no one watched the final eight seasons or the series finale.

My broadcast journalism professor at LSU told us that it was set for the Vietnam War. But switched to Korea because of blow back.

the theme song never sounded happy even before you know the title.

Alan Alda singlehandedly ruined that show

The first 5 seasons are literally tv gold

Then it gets progressively worse

In the original book a lot of the docs were eccentrics.

I would recommend it highly.

But also remember, it was a tongue in cheek reference to the Vietnam war, as well as a commentary on women’s lib and current day politics of the time. Without saying it too on the nose.

Much like other shows of the 70s, which would actually present both sides of an argument, but eventually landing in favor of one over the other. And almost always on the left.

Exactly. It followed Robert Altman's stylistic choices from the outstanding movie.

Except for Chachi and Leather Tuscadero's hair.

Alda and "BJ Honeycutt" both ruined it. Some of the other actors were good.

The movie was outstanding.

Good observation. Never thought about that before. I kinda grew up on the show, not live but in syndication.

Alda channeled his version of "Groucho Marx" and morphed it into his version of Hawkeye, making him pretty insufferable at times.

I was never big on Mash growing up, although I remember watching it, and definitely the finale. I think I remember even watching some episodes of AfterMash.

My dad was ill for several years before he passed in 2020, and we watched a lot of old shows together during that time. He loved westerns and we watched a lot of BuzzR TV which was game shows like Match Game and Concentration. Anyways, Mash was one of those shows we tended to watch, and I enjoyed it much more as an adult. It is well written and the cast plays off each other insanely well. It is dated and hasn't aged as well as some shows from that era, but I can understand how it was top 5 all those years.
