Definitely one of my favorite movies about the Second World War. Even though Saving Private Ryan touched on the Normandy landings, The Longest Day remains the definitive film about the battle.

I love the final scene between Richard Burton and Richard Beymer.

Pvt. Dutch Schultz : Getting on toward night. You know something? I haven't fired my gun all day. I keep hearing shootin', but every time I get there, everybody's gone!

Flight Officer David Campbell : It's funny, isn't it? He's dead, I'm crippled, You're lost. I suppose it's always like that. I mean war.

Pvt. Dutch Schultz : I wonder who won?

Just an amazing.....

I just visited Normandy and Omaha beach. My guide told me The Longest Day plays every July there like It's a Wonderful Life plays at Christmas here.

I remember back in the 90's AMC channel played a marathon of war movies around Memorial and Veteran's Day. The Longest Day, along with A Bridge Too Far, Tora Tora Tora, The Great Escape, and Midway were staples of those marathons, so I would see it at least twice a year. Great movie and a lot of neat historical connections between the making of the movie and those who participated in the actual invasion.

The book, along with a bridge too far and the last battle, was written by Cornelius Ryan, who spent several years for each book compiling firsthand accounts from both sides, both military and civilian, and all are fantastic reads.

It is and, frankly, it gets better every time I watch it.

It is fun and serious, somber and hopeful, dignified and borderline campy at times.

It is, with all due respect to the opening of SPR, the greatest movie about D-Day and probably the greatest American war movie of all time.
