left shields down for no reason & waited till Khan had already made his move. It was obvious something weird was going on. No reason at all not to raise shields in that situation.

He thought it was a friendly ship captained by a former crew member?

Hindsight is 50/50

Not nearly as dumb as Janeway putting the whole ship at risk for coffee.

(Just sayin'...)

Starfleet sent the Enterprise, which was full of Trainees into a potential hostile area because it was the closest ship..Kirk did call for Yellow Alert to put the Ship in a heighten level of readiness. This was a Federation ship that was coming in shields down and signaling communication problems. He acted reasonably.

The real FUBAR was how nobody knew that Seti Alpha 6 was gone and they were exploring the real Seti Alpha 5? Kirk dropped Khan on that world 15 years earlier and Starlfeet had a mapped system and no one realized it was down a planet? Also, why would you even operate in a system where one of histories greatest villains was living with a population of genetically enhanced supermen with ambitions of global domination were living?

It took Spock to figure out Khan's 2D military thinking when Kirk, a seasoned veteran of space travel & commanding starships that utilizing "up and down" is all that was needed to save the day.

Well it was a replay of Balance of Terror, and both were based on submarine battles. What complicated both battles were the relative ineffectiveness of sensors. Even among seasoned pilots, perspective gets skewed in bad weather with or without instrument problems.

Still better than anything from 2009 onward.

It happens so fast but the movie does a good job of clearly showing the audience how Kahn achieved the advantage as well as Kirk’s mistake. Uhura alerts that’s comms are down which is when Savvik reminds Kirk about protocol but Kirk ignores it. Spok scans to find out if the problem is legit which is when you see the Reliant getting ahead of Enterprise by raising the shields. By this time it’s over, Enterprise is one step too slow and the events can’t be reversed. Such a great scene

Kirk’s counterpunch is brilliant as well. Getting Khan to delay by fooling him that they had any knowledge about Genesis, playing up that the damage he caused their ship was causing more malfunctions than it actually did.

And the kicker line to Saavik:

“You have to learn why things work on a starship.”

Kirk uses his experience each time to outwit Khan. Despite Khan’s superior intellect, he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.

Like how to run a starship.

Honestly probably the best star trek movie.

I remember enjoying it so much as a kid that we hid in the bathroom stalls until they started letting people in for the next showing then we snuck back in for better seats

Back in the day when every showing was sold out and the line outside went around the building.

I miss being an 80s kid.

ETA up next on Plex tonight!

Yes it was brilliant, he plays to Kahn’s hubris and uses his experience like you said to which Spok says “assuming he hasn’t changed the codes, he’s very intelligent” so it’s still a gamble and throughout the movie it shows that it’s taking both Kirk and Spok to outmaneuver Kahn which ends up with one of them sacrificing his life to finally overcome him.

He also sold the "fact" that he was stranded inside Regula pretty well, and goaded the superior intellect into giving away his tactical advantage in the Mutara Nebula.

Kirk made mistakes, but was always able to fly by the seat of his pants and cheat death. Until he didn't. Of course, that was what the no-win scenario and coming to terms with Spock's death was all about.

Kirk didn't have to be smart. He had Spock for that. He just had to be the guy with the biggest balls.

He had Spock to think and Bones to patch everyone up.

His job was "to boldly go where no man has gone before".

That score almost by itself raises that film above all the other sequels...

Any of you other Gen Xers remember when that movie came out how people freaked out about the earworms?...
Those critters freaked out everyone back in the day.
