Box Office: Deadpool &Wolverine crosses the 1 billion mark

Marvel Studios and Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine — in addition to crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office on Saturday — stayed atop the North American chart with $54.2 million in its third weekend. The blockbuster, which has obliterated one record after another, finished Sunday with an estimated domestic tally of $494.3 million and $535.2 million overseas for a worldwide haul of $1.029 billion.
The movie is a huge win for Marvel, and there’s more to come. The pic is only days away from passing up Warner Bros.’ Joker to become the top-grossing R-rated film of all time at the worldwide box office (a record it already holds domestically).

Sony’s new female-powered It Ends With Us, starring and produced by Lively, came in a strong second with an estimated $50 million, well ahead of most expectations.
The combo of the movies is a big win for the August box office, with overall domestic revenue expected to be up 35 percent over the same weekend last year, and even more noteworthy, 19 percent ahead of 2019, the last year before the pandemic. To boot, it is the first time that two back-to-back August films have ever opened to $50 million or more.
Ticket buyers for It Ends With Us are 84 percent female spread across all adult age groups; 60 percent are between ages 18 and 34, while 33 are age 35 and older. It also has a notable advantage in appealing to an ethnically diverse audience.

The weekend’s other new nationwide entry was Lionsgate’s big-budget Borderlands, which bit the dust in opening to $8.8 million, behind already muted projections and despite a star-studded cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munbteanu.
Directed by Eli Roth, the video game adaptation — which cost north of $110 million to produce — was roundly panned by critics; audiences felt the same in slapping with a D+ from a screenplay. Lionsgate insiders say the studio’s losses will be minimized by selling off international rights.

Not surprising Borderlands did poorly. Movie looks just terrible like a SNL parody of a bad fantasy action movie.

We accidentally walked into this theater instead of DP. It was absolutely packed. We were shocked.

Yeah, saw Deadpool and Wolverine for the first time yesterday. It was fun but probably my least favorite of the three Deadpool movies.
Lots of fantastic cameos and I lost it on the first big one when they get to the void. I got spoiled that that actor was in the movie and thought it had to be for another role (I intentionally went in as spoiler free as possible trying to not even look at the trailers), but when it wasn’t I couldn’t stop laughing for a while over that.
Still a 3.5 out of 4 stars, I’d just give the first two 4 stars each.

International numbers

Impressively, a female-driven title that cost peanuts is making bank. To wit: Sony and Wayfarer Studios’ It Ends With Us has had a mega $80M global opening. The international box office portion of that, before a lot of other markets weigh in, is $30M. Notably still to come are France, Germany, Colombia, Thailand, Indonesia, Italy, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

All over, we’re seeing great returns – Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 added $18.8M overseas this frame to take the international cume to $477.1M and global to $807.2M.
The Top 5 markets now are: China ($50.3M), UK ($45.2M), Mexico ($42.1M), Germany ($30.1M) and France ($26.7M).
Lest we forget the biggest movie of the year, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 added another $14.5M this weekend (its 9th)… The international cume is now $957.3M for $1,593.8M global..

I will have to see this movie this week against my will and am hoping to have a less than dry penis as a result.

I have seen TONS of commercials for this movie and ZERO for It ends with us. Kinda shocked with how poorly Borderlands did.

Says a lot about movie going this weekend when the number **2** movie breaks 50 million domestically.
Borderlands crashing and burning isn't surprising.
No advertising. Little dedication to the source material.
There was no political split on like/hate for the movie either. Absolutely no one liked it.

I went to go see Deadpool on Sunday; most of the folks around me were buying tickets to It Ends With Us. Moms with daughters, college girls, etc. It definitely had a target demographic and did REALLY well with said demographic.

I'm going to luck out and not have to see this because even though the wife read the book (apparently books because there is two of them) she thinks the movie looks bad and a poor adaptation. So thank God for that.

So you are saying most women are into love stories and not comic book movies?!?! Hmmm, interesting.

I'm guessing it's a love story? I legit have no idea what the book is about, and because the people in front of me were having issues with tickets they purchased online I missed all but the end of the first trailer before Deadpool... which was for Ends.

Nice to see Longlegs cleanup. Anyone see Cuckoo? Heard it was good.

All the best parts were in the previews.
Should have been much better than it turned out to be.
