Several days removed from this draft and I am still unsure how I feel about it. I heard Tripplet describe it as a refurbishing of our roster, but others have decried that we didn't get anybody that is a for sure day 1 starter, outside of Banks. I think I am like most here when I say I liked the Day 3 picks better than the Day 2 picks, but it is really easy to see these guys replacing DA guys this season on the roster.

I am excited for next draft because I believe there will be a damn near complete purge of all DA guys by this time next year. It seems we went the route of getting those guys now and have them ready to replace next year.

How many "for sure" first day starters did the other teams get with their 2nd and 3rd day picks?

People just have unrealistic expectations around what teams should be getting from the draft.

Your first being good, one of your second or third being an eventual starter and getting one long term decent contributor from day 3 is the bar/standard for a decent draft.

If you asked a bunch of fans what "misses" other teams have had in the last 10 years im not sure you get any responses outside of the top 10 picks honestly.

They tried very hard to hit a lot of singles and doubles, without risking strikeouts for swinging for the fences.

All of the guys have played in or started a lot of games. All have solid production. Most of them were multi-year starters and multi-year captain types. All except Shough were extremely durable with very little time missed for injury.

They NEED young guys to make the team, basically

It’s a new coach and new staff. I think guys like Kamara, Davis, Fuaga, Shaheed, Bresee and McCoy are guys that translate to any coach or style. Besides that, we need to see what the coaching staff wants to do with the other people on the roster including the rookies.

For example, Foskey could actually be used this year. Or maybe he’s not. Taylor might emerge as an outside corner, or maybe he becomes a joker/hybrid safety type guy. We really just don’t know yet.

More so than the people drafted, I’m just excited that we kept all our picks and seemed to be retooling and rebuilding our depth instead of swinging for the fences in the draft or free agency. I’m very excited Dennis Allen is no longer our coach!!!

Exactly.

No one know how these draft pick will contribute in 2025. but I think it's a safe bet to assume.

Banks will start day 1 (Somewhere on the Oline) in 2025.

Scough will start and contribute at some point in 2025.

Broughton will contribute as rotational DT at some point in 2025.

Sanker will contribute on special teams early in 2025 and possibly get playing time on defense at some point in 2025.

Stutsman will contribute on special teams and possibly get some time on defense in 2025.

Riley will get some time on defense in 2025.

Neal will get time in rotation on offense in 2025.

Matavao might make the 53 man roster in 2025 depending on the health of Hill and Moreau.

Diggs might make the 53 man roster depending on the development of Foskay and his ability to contribute on special teams, etc.

Past 2025 it's ridiculous trying to project but if things worked out like this in 20-25 I'd call the draft class a win early on and have hope for the future with them.

Except Saints fans. They'll tell you a 6th or 7th round pick not making the 53 man roster as a rookie was a bust and a wasted pick by the dumb GM.

I honestly think our 7th rounder Diggs is not only going to make the roster, but he will be a situation pass rusher. He is one of the only guys on our roster that has his body type and athleticism.

I’m on the opposite side of the fence here. My biggest issues in this draft was passing on Jalon Walker and selecting Shough in the 2nd round. With that being said, Banks is a day one starter at LT and our oline went from being weak to very strong. Shough has potential and i just hope I’m wrong about this. After him is where I get really hopeful. Broughton has a ton of upside and seems just all out violent. They loved him so much they talked about him in the 2nd round. Sanker and Stutsman are my favorite players in this draft for us. They will both eventually be starters on this team. I really like Neal and I expect him to make the 53 and also contribute. I don’t pay any attention or much attention to anyone after that as making the roster is low for them.

I think they landed 4 legit eventual starters. I think people have an unrealistic expectations of how a draft is supposed to look.

At the end of the day, this draft will be judged solely by if Shough booms or busts

If he busts, we will be looking at the guys who went 41-64 in the 2nd rd and will be asking we we passed on ____

Could be Mason Taylor, could be Mike Green, could be Tre Harris, could be Will Johnson etc

Yea. I'm hopeful for this guy. I like what I've read about him but still question why he fell almost out if the draft.

These were probably the same guys that were talking about how week this draft was going into draft week. They made 9 draft picks. The belief is Banks is a sure starter (as he should being a top 10 pick), and you have 8 other guys. The reality is there are weaknesses at every level of the team, if they landed 5+ guys from this draft that can contribute anywhere for 3+ years, it was a good draft. We all want to get the All-Pro/HoF guy every round, but that's not realistic and you need to roster ~60 guys (53 man roster plus PS). The more you get through the draft and undrafted FAs, the better the team will be in the long run

One draft isn’t going to completely refurbish your roster. Here’s some perspective..

quote:

On average, NFL teams find around 1-2 long-term starters per draft, with the majority coming from the first three rounds. While the first round is considered the "starter round", it's also where the highest percentage of drafted players are expected to make an NFL roster

This is why some people were against using pick 40 on a QB. QB hit rates drop significantly after day 1 but there were still very good odds of us finding a long term starter at another position.

I thought it was pretty bad. I mean time will tell. Everyone that isn’t a regular on this board hates it and I don’t disagree. The Shough pick at 40 was a joke.

Saints shite the bed on day 2. Several guys at 40 and 71 I liked a lot better.

Maybe Shough turns out ok, but it was really stupid drafting him that high. At 93 or in the 4th round would have been way better value. If someone else takes him, no big deal, the qb class is way better next year.

The big purge I agree will be next off season. We may also see more players than usual moved during next season that CKM doesn't want around. Meat and potatoes is a good description of this year's draft.
