Norman Osborne’s a billionaire scientist
Who never has time for his son
But then something went screwy
And before you knew he
Was trying to kill everyone

I don't have a piano man and even if I did I wouldn't expect him to sing on command, so your entire premise is wrong.

Plot twist: it’s a gay bar:

quote:

There's an old man sittin' next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son, can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

quote:

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's some place that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As the smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

quote:

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone

quote:

And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

… because they know Billy isn’t gay.

I always thought it was so cool that it was a "true" story, in that he was playing in a dive bar during a dispute with this record label.

I met a woman who is one of those singing piano players in Pat O'Brien's piano bar. I mentioned that there must be some songs she's always asked to play and always hates to play.

Without missing a beat she blurted out (in about 4 seconds):

Piano Man
Brown Eyed Girl
Don't Stop Believing
Sweet Caroline

She says her brain goes into autopilot and her hands have muscle memory when doing these.

No, not really. Yall think it's a gay bar simply because it's a bunch of dudes there drinking? Back in the day that's pretty much all bars were: a bunch of dudes getting drunk while the wives were at home. Not only does this seem like a big reach, it also doesn't fit with the overall theme of the song.

True story, it was a gig that he did for like 6 months at a bar in L.A before he was famous. And his first wife was the waitress.

He records a new album in L.A, it flops and decides to move back to NY.
On the long ride to NY he writes "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" & "New York State of Mind".

Can't beat his musical genius.
