Classic bands at concerts

Would you pay a good chunk of cash to see a classic band where the lead singer has been replaced? I’ve never understood why people do this.

You might as well just go see a cover band at a bar and save paying 12 bucks for a beer

I have seen ZZ top 3 times.
I didn't pay as much for all those shows combined to what they are asking now in BR.
Same for Heart.............the prices are insane.

That’s my point. Nothing wrong with going to a local place and hear a cover band because of the songs they’ve sung in the past. But to pay hundreds? Makes no sense.

There's a lot of variables. Bands go beyond just who the lead singer is.
Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots are touring. I would go see either in a smaller venue. I wouldn't pay a lot, or go to a stadium.
I've seen the Eagles twice in recent years without Glen Frey, but obviously there are other original members.
I saw Van Halen with Sammy Hagar in 1986.
So the answer is yes, in certain situations.

All I can say is that ZZ Top was fantastic when I got to see them free in 1972. So I can’t relate…

No. I saw the Eagles about three years ago but Frye's kid and Vince Gill covered his songs so not really an apples to apples comparison since Henley still sings a lot of songs.

Good luck convincing anyone here of that.
I've seen Queen with Adam Lambert in a sold out arena. It was a fantastic show.

I totally agree with the OP. Don’t want to go see these old bands. They don’t sound as good, especially the singers.

John Paul Jones said just a few years back that if you wanted to see Led Zeppelin pay to see a premium tribute band and you would get a better show. I'm assuming he was remarking on how old they have gotten

While technically true, it’s disingenuous.
Joe Walsh has been in the band since 1975 and Timothy B. Schmit since 1977.

People want different things. Some want quality, some want the experience, some want to check it off a list
If Led Zeppelin got back together, I don’t care if they are in wheelchairs, I’ll go see them if I’m able.
That’s why I saw the Eagles last year. Of course they are older, but I had never seen them. This is likely their last tour. Now I have. I was under no false notion that I was getting the 1970s version.
There are lots of classic bands touring now and I will see any of them I am able to.

Oh yes, I would to. I did see Page and Plant in 1998, unfortunately that's probably as close to Zeppelin that I'll ever get

they are a cover band. There’s no shame in that good for them for making a living as musicians

I go and see dead and company as often as I can. I’ll be there in august for the SFCA shows. It makes me happy to be with the tribe and hear the music played live. They are also a cover band

Absolutely not. Saw Jeff Lynne ELO is Nashville a few years ago, and it was awesome. I cant fathom listening to someone else on lead vocals. Great topic BTW

I don’t accept your premise.
Walsh and Schmit are both in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Eagles.
Walsh was in the band starting in 1975 on the Hotel California album, which is their biggest selling album outside of Greatest Hits.
Schmit was on The Long Run album which was a huge success.
By your stance, Fleetwood Mac was a cover band by 1974 and Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are not real members.
By your stance Journey was a cover band WITH Steve Perry starting in 1977.
The list goes on and on.
I think most people consider Walsh and Schmit to be Eagles.
That’s three core members of 50ish years each. That's about as solid as you will find in a classic rock band.

it’s not worth arguing about and we can differ, but this is dumb and you know it. Walsh and Schmitt contributed nothing of lasting impact to the eagles’ songbook (Walsh wrote “in the city” so there’s one, but minor). They are both very talented players but they could easily be replaced with other talented players (even back in 1975) without affecting the eagles’ legacy a bit
your journey analogy is equally dumb

So your stance is that if you aren’t a songwriter, then you aren’t a valid, important member of the band and therefore replaceable?
Congrats, you just named the vast, vast majority of members of all bands.
Most musicians are not songwriters and most bands have one or two members that do most of the writing.
Songwriting ability has zero to do with whether you are a legit member of a band.
