ICE officers could face jail time under a Michigan bill that bans masked police

Trump administration officials say this practice is needed to safeguard ICE officers and their families from being harassed or threatened in public and online after the officer’s identity is uncovered, according to the Associated Press .

Bill sponsor state Rep. Betsy Coffia, D- Traverse City , said “justice needs no masks.”
“For the average person, these incidents look like violent kidnappings,” Coffia said. “With this new federal tactic of wearing masks with no identification, there is no way for the public, the people being accosted or grabbed or even local law enforcement and local, state elected leaders to know who these folks are.”

The proposed mask and identity concealment ban in Michigan would apply to all local, state and federal law enforcement operating in the state but includes provisions for covert operations and masking for officer safety.
Violating the proposed law would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a fine up to $1,000.
The proposed law mandates that law enforcement officers, while interacting with a member of the public during their duties, must display their name or badge number as well as the full name or initials of their law enforcement agency.
Any wearing of a mask or attempt at identity concealment would violate this provision.

I always thought the 80’s was the Wild West because of all the drug cartels. I can’t remember seeing news footage back then of cops of any kind wearing masks. How much worse are things today to make these Ice agents feel they need to conceal their identities?

This will obviously not pass legal scrutiny. The state of MI or any of the other states has zero jurisdiction over the dress codes of any federal entity. Hell, the states don’t even have jurisdiction over the dress code of the city/county employees in their respective states.
It’s like the city of Minneapolis trying to dictate dress codes for NYPD.

I don’t think I was clear enough in my previous comment so let me try this again.
Back in the 80’s if a drug cartel killed a cop then some Law Enforcement Agency was gonna assign a few people to clear their desk and go after the organization that did the killing very aggressively. Then they would hand the case off to a prosecutor that was gonna do the same. They might not always nail them but sooner or later they would nail those people on some charge.
When are we gonna go back to making it understood to all these cartels and other international criminal organizations and terrorists that if you harm a LEO or their family it would be the end of them. Just seems like these agents are being told to wear mask and keep their identities hidden because they will not do what it takes to protect them.

In the 80s did we have states passing laws encouraging the cartels to kill federal agents?

They cant even produce safe drinking water in the state and have to beg the fed govt to help.......yet their focus is on masks??????????
