President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will prevent high U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from snapping back into effect for another 90 days, a White House official told CNBC on Monday afternoon.

The order was signed just hours before midnight, when the pause on Trump’s tariffs was set to expire.

The delay was the expected outcome from the latest round of talks between U.S. trade negotiators and their Chinese counterparts, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden, late last month.

If the deadline was not extended, then U.S. duties on China would have shot back up to where they stood in April, when the tariff war between the world’s largest trading nations was at its peak.

The two sides had agreed to pause most of the tariffs on each other’s goods in May, after negotiators met for the first time in Geneva, Switzerland.

That 90-day pause was set to end Tuesday, prior to Trump signing the latest order to extend it.

I was told in no uncertain terms that our setting and then extending "deadlines" is how we show everyone how serious we are about the deadlines we set

There was speculation last week but apparently the order to extend was signed today.

Probably has more to do with ending the war in Ukraine. He needs to leave the door open to tariffs on China for buying Russian oil, same as he's doing with India.

No one knows what is happening in negotiations. Yet here we are acting like a bunch crybabies.

Let the process happen.

It’s always amusing to see people complain here—none of whom are billionaires or former Presidents of the United States.

Let the man do his job; he’s better at it than the rest of you keyboard warriors.

I think he knows if he puts crushing tariffs on China he tanks the stock and bond market. . China knows this too. This will be a long drawn out affair as both sides try to find a way to claim victory.

The frick he is. The rolling out of these tariffs against the world has lost us allies and is about as haphazard as it can be. Come on, man. You’re smarter than this.

The fact that he doesn't seem to understand that negotiations between businesses and negotiations between nation states are fundamentally different is probably why the last few months have been such a shitshow.

Wasn’t that going to be over on his first day? I was told it was going to be easy, so easy, to end this war. What happened?

He underestimated the intelligence agencies and Europe's desire for this war and the extent they would go to keep it going.

It's amazing that his fanbase (not sure what else to call it at this point) believes every word out of his mouth and ignores it when his "facts" are continuously shown to be untruths.

Has MAGA done the math on 1500% reductions in the price of medications? Well, here's the math. A $50 prescription now means that the pharmacy will pay YOU $700 for the prescription.

Canadians have fought at our side in every major conflict. Go ahead and laugh at that all you want.
