Can someone explain the appeal of Marfa, Texas to me?
It pops up every now and then in Instagram reels.
Is it worth a visit? What’s there to see and do? What type of tourist / person does it attract and what types live there? It appears you can see it all in a day. Is that true?

People from Austin and New Orleans. You should pretty much get the picture.

It's a town out in the middle of nowhere that was relevant when it was a water stop for the railroad.
Now it's a hipster/girls weekend destination.
It's fine for a weekend getaway in Far West Texas. The St. George is a good hotel option with decent food.
The Gage Hotel in Marathon is another good option if you just want a weekend away out in BFE.

If you are interested in contemporary art it's a good spot. But if you aren't the entire region is beautiful high desert at 5000 ft altitude with mountains all around. There is some good hiking , hunting, off roading and scenic drives. Like someone said , Alpine is 20 minutes away and not as hipster as Marfa but slowly trending that way. Ft Davis is 20 minutes away as well, those 3 towns form a triangle . Ft Davis is a more traditional tourist town but has the McDonald Observatory nearby that you can visit during their monthly Star Parties. Marathon is another town about 30-40 minutes from alpine that has the famous Gage Hotel. Then about 2 hours away from any of those Towns is Big Bend National Park. We love going down there even though it's a 9 hour drive for us.

Do you dress like Stephen Wilson, Jr.?
Yes - Book the trip.
No - Keep it moving.

I went to the pavilion between marfa and alpine to watch for the lights. There was a fairly large crowd there. We saw nothing.

I saw the lights many years ago before there was a pavilion, when you just parked on the side of the road and sat on the hood of your car or tailgate of your truck. I've been a couple of times since they built that crappy pavilion and never seen anything.

also 1.5 hrs to chinati hot springs which is one of the coolest places on earth. I don’t think marfa itself is worthy of a road trip but combined with all the other places you mentioned it’s a really wonderful area to visit

Hipsters/Geeks.
The area itself is kinda cool. Several other towns worth seeing.

Spent a week there in 1987.
Loved it. It's changed so much since then, from what I've heard, no desire to return.

Paul I just Google mapped this place and how the hell do you get there? Looks like it’s half a days drive from any decent size airport?

Like everything ... take it for what it is. A quiet, fun little spot when driving cross country. I would much rather stay there than El Paso or some other dinky spot. Is it "hip" ... ? okay, so young artists flock there? is that so bad.
There are some good restaurants and notably, the Donald Judd foundation. And the burrito/coffee game is strong. And some decent music on the weekends as well.
It's a relaxing weekend for sure and worth the stop if you are traversing that part of Texas.

It was the scene for one of the John Sanford "Prey" novels.

3 hrs from El Paso or Midland . El Paso is worth checking out too.

I thought Marfa was pretty cool. I didn’t see any influencers lying in the middle of the road taking glamour shots. There were good bars and restaurants and it had a cool edge of the world vibe to it.
But give me Terelingua.thats a real desert town.
